If you can be relied upon to always show up when and where you say you will, then letting them know ahead of time that you have to reschedule a practice is not an issue in the slightest. If it is, then they are the ones who are the douches and should be instructed on how to kick rocks.

Would not be an issue for me and has happened sometimes with my last band, it never had a detrimental effect on us. We also rehearsed with people missing, working on new material, listening to songs we want to cover, working on arrangements etc. There's so much you can still do with only half a band.

In my current band we're only two people with flexible work/study schedules so this is even less of an issue. Just shoot me a mail if you can make it, if not that's cool too, I'll work on some riffs or practice stuff I need to catch up on. When we do see each other it's less of a rehearsal anyway, more like putting together the ideas each had come up with. Basically prepared brainstorming. Personally I like this better than the whole band rehearsal once a week drag and you never get anywhere because half the band wouldn't practice at home (big pet peeve of mine - last band was particularly bad, whenever we learned a handful new songs the same number of old ones they would suddenly forget how to play...)

We all are into a lot of different styles of music. But for us its ussually more than one member who wants to see a show so it hasn't been much of an issue. If one of my band members did it every now and then i wouldn't be upset about it. I know for me personally I've learned a LOT by watching shows. Its a great way to learn, even if its a subpar bass player and you realize you don't want to do something they did.

As a general rule if you feel you have to ask the question, it's usually more a quest for validation of (douchey, goofy, selfish) behavior rather than an honest inquiry for opinion.

This is the (rare) exception which proves the rule.

I almost got kicked out of high school band because I wanted to go see primus with my friends but I thought it wasn't worth getting screamed at so I didn't go. The band leader embarrassed me I front of the whole band. Crazy. I did see the who later that year though good thing it ended right there I would've skipped to see them anyway :)

Oh, I thought the drummer's girlfriend was PART of the band. What is she doing there? It's totally unfair to everyone else - drummer is distracted, drummer has less time to discuss music at hand with actual band members. And what, she gets to chime in whenever she wants - no,no,no to gf or b/f at rehearsals or it better be only rare occasion.

Considering they cancelled and then re-activated the rehearsal without checking if you had made alternate plans you are all good.

Someone made a comment about they should be fine without you - I like to think my bandmates suck without my firm hand holding down the low end.:D
