I've noticed an increased interest in vintage MIJ crap lately,

Surprisingly, the modern reissue is well built and sounds great.

That's because the 'reissue' shared nothing but shape.. The original was really quite awful. The bridge plate would warp as you tuned up, it sounded thin.. It redlly had very few redeeming features!

My friend has a black Spectrum that I used to fuss over when at his place. Smaller bass, made of heavier hardwood. It's one of the best basses I've played, no doubt. I'm pretty sure playing the bass started my want for high end.

I prefer Greco excrement but there is one Fernandes that's been eluding me(price and available when I have funds), the neck-thru P-clone.
Some smelly ones:

Even my daughter got loaned one in college(jazz band). I told her band director to call me 1st if he EVER wanted to sell it.

I love Japanese made instruments and barring my H22 and a couple of Squiers they're all I own... Greco and Fender Japan produce instruments of excellent quality. IMO my 70s Grecos stand up very admirably against MIA Fenders but my friend's MIA P I played was new... a difficult comparison I believe at this early stage. :)

I just bought my second late 80's Charvel 3B, both in near mint condition. One black, one red. Nech thru, active preamp, tons of sustain...throw a set of Rotosounds on one of these and they are hands down the best sounding, loudest PICKSTYLE hard rock/metal basses I have ever heard, period, bar none. Built like tanks, flawless craftsmanship....I wouldn't sell either one of these for $1500 a piece, because I'd never be able to replace em. Maybe theyaare one trick ponies, but they do that one trick better than anyone else.
