Well it doesn't write "PS5" in the headstock or anywhere else. Is this the full model name? From the serial number that starts with 9 I found out it was made in Japan and nothing more really.
Anyways I swapped the stock "Jackson" branded pickups with the quartepounds because they sounded average....

well as far as I remember they only made the Performer series in 94/95, and they usually came with PS5 on the TR cover, just like the guitar counterpart had PS4 on the TR cover.....
p.s. the serials on all bolt-on MIJ guitars are only numbers, they do not show the year of manufacture...
I only use the serials on my older Charvels as a good indicator of the year since I have so many of them and can tell the difference in years made.

Were the Quarter Pounders a big improvement? I have been deliberating putting a set in one of mine. The stock pickups do seem very average. Not bad, but not inspiring.
If I had started out on a Jackson I probably would be better by now.

My preampped models are the shizznit compared to the weak passive OEM units.
I put EMG Selects in one of my units, and it made a "world" of difference" for that passive sound, so I assume that the QP's also do wonders for the weak OEM's.......

The OEM passive P pup in my Pro Concert V sounds amazingly fat and ballsy and "live", but I didn't discover that until I pulled out the preamp. 
The J pup sounded great sans preamp as well, but it picks up hum and buzz like a mofo so it's gone too. Now I just have the P wired straight to the output jack, and it is the best bass tone I have ever gotten. Rock! I'm planning on putting a second P in the J position.

I have a parts body that would be a good candidate for a mod like that. Actually I was gonna add a humbucker or a double-J in the J spot so it would be less of a routing issue. They actually DID make a single humbucker model1 in 86 only in the bridge position, and missed out on it months ago from ebay so I have no clue what it would sound like.
Fat and ballsy..eh, My 95CHS is the worst case of "thin" I ever heard, as the Models are quite better.
and YES the J pup is a buzzer in all except for 2 of the Models I have. ( typical the 2 I never use anyway )

The quarter pounders were an improvement in pretty much every aspect like output tone and clarity. Anyway you can't go wrong with any descent pickups like Basslines, Dimarzio or EMG. They' ll make a big difference compared to the OEM pickups.
I might have to pick up some QP's. I've got active EMG's in the other two. Put some flat wounds on the Futura and some QP's in the Kelly - get a little variety going.

ZBAR, I offered the guy who had that white P-P Tbird to sell it...nope

out of all my basses, I only have one with active EMGs from the factory, and that one is my Jackson Tbird. The rest of them are preamped passives.

This is my first post and first Jackson bass as well.
I bought a Jackson Performer PS-5 yesterday for $70usd (new years present to myself!) and I wanted to know what year this was made.
I did some research and found that this bass is MIK by the serial number. 7 digits beginning with 10 if I am correct. I read a few posts back that the Performer Series was induced between 94'-95' so does that confirm my question or where they made at any other year?

I'm not an expert on the Year (look at my Username ) But I CAN tell you $70 is a mighty good deal.

I have a similarly grubby-looking metallic blue 3B. And all this talk of pickup replacements--I have big plans for that bass. I took out the preamp and junk from the control cavity and I'm going to start from scratch. My plan is to put a DiMarzio Split P and X2N-7 in it with a vol/tone/tone and maybe a push/pull pot or two, not to mention a new bridge. It's such a great instrument. I can't wait to get it set up and sounding the way it should!
welcome futureshock, MIJ not MIK and I think they only lasted in 95 and didn't even make it to 96. 70 bucks is great cause I would have paid 100.

The Professional models were the top models back then such as the Futura,KipWinger,TBX,KBX,Concert...etc... As long as the neck is straight and the frets/nut are good, your golden. All the electronics are easily replaceable as well as choice of strings (nut is cut for 45-100) to get a tone you will enjoy. The body is alder like my 95 CHS and easy to play for hours without too much weight.
I like the older Charvel longer headstock and heavier poplar bodies.

I found the bass on craigslist for $100, but made an offer at $75. We made a deal and told me to keep the $5 bucks and buy a new knob (the volume was missing) or buy some gas. He was a guitar player and bought this bass just for. Never played in 10+ years.
The neck/ frets are fine, just needed a bit of cleaning. The input jack was slighty rusted so I replaced that and threw in some EMGs and new strings.
Speaking of Charvels, I ran into a San Dimas bass at a Samash in NYC for $600. I was sold on Charvel/Jackson after playing it. Simply amazing. Wish I would of have bought it.

To find an old SanDimas birdseye is rare for under a grand, as you can tell by the few ads on EBAY all the time for 1500-2000.
so I went the el-chepo route and found a MIJ 95 CHS
My experience and the the great thing in "consistency" for these things is they all sound very similar in "pairs" ( meaning my model 1's sound the same, the model 2's sound the same, and finally the model 3-4's with the preamps sound the same in their OEM configs )
