For me it really depends. I have a Status S2 and it has a lot of punchy low mids. But I do find that Mark King's tone is sometimes, as you say, a bit on the glassy side. I saw some Level 42 shows during the Eternity tour when MK was using a Status T bass and those basses had a more gutsy sound to them than the King basses seem to. But it's good to hear Mark on the Jaydees again. Those are the basses I most associate with my favourite Level 42 period.Completely agree, I saw them during the "Retroglide" tour and I hated that glassy tone of the Status basses. There was no low end.
Heck, I have the same complaint about Flea's live bass tone during the "By the way" era, that Modulus sounded so glassy.
