Double Bass Jazz Licks: Bass Clef Version

Great stuff Bopland. I'm really enjoying it. There are some really interesting lines in here.

A lot of runs would be much easier using a 5 string. Were these originally transposed from sax?

This is a great way to break out of your own ruts and challenge yourself with lines using a different approach.

Originally there was a compilation of licks in treble clef transposed from a variety of instruments including sax/brass, guitar, and piano. Then all those licks were adapted to bass range keeping melodic ideas intact.

I'd be keen on one of these if you still have any available @bopland

Please let me know your mailing address in PM.

Just got my copy.

This book is chock full of jazzy goodness! I can't believe how much great content there is. This will among many things help me get out of some of the ruts I find myself in. I'm going to weave this into my practice routine starting today.

A few comments:
1) It's under-priced. It's worth WAAAY more than the current price on Amazon
2) I wish it was spiral-bound. The binding, along with the massive number of pages make it hard to lay the book flat on the music stand. I'll probably take it to kinkos to have it spiral bound.
3) It would be nice if there were more instructions on how to approach it. I plan on practicing and learning the licks, but also breaking them down to see how they work for the chords and what role each note plays. I'm sure there are endless ways to use the book, but I think a bit more elaboration could really help a student, especially one who is using this on their own.

I'll add positive review on Amazon soon.

Many thanks for the feedback! All makes perfect sense.

The price may go a bit up but will likely remain reasonable as compared to other volumes. Spiral bound is an option that adds a few $$ to the cost so it was initially avoided. Thanks a lot for saying it is important for you. I will consider an option to create a spiral bound version or make it default binding. Great point about detailed instructions on using it. Noted.

All good points. I might look into that spiral bind idea.

I kind of like how open it is to your own interpretation - use it as a practice tool in whatever way you think is best.

I was thinking it might be good to upload some vids of favourite lines. I'm particularly enjoying the Turnaround section .

I've had several music books cut and re-bound as spirals, and would rather pay a few more bucks for the book to be spiral bound in the first place. Sometimes there isn't a lot of space left on that side of the page. I do understand the economics. Imagine a soft-bound Real Book, though...

I found one other thing, there is a page at the beginning titled "Notation" that shows the chord notes for many chords, on a staff. Although I have the Bass Clef version of the book, this page is in Treble Clef. I can deal with it, but it seems out of place in the Bass Clef version.

My copy is here already! Alas, it actually arrived sometime the tail-end of last week, but I've been flat out with a project and didn't see the post office's "Tried to deliver... now you gotta pick it up" notice until Saturday night. It was a long Sunday and I just squeeked through the PO's doors today a few minutes AFTER they closed.

Fantastic! I thought it would be more of a home-style, finished-at-Kinko's type of book, I wasn't expecting a proper published and bound book with its own ISBN #!

Very clean layout, easy to read.

The quotes are well chosen, inspiring and add spice – reminding me of aphorisms most of us forget or take for granted, but could well do with being reminded of more often.

"Jazz Licks: Bass Clef Version" has arrived the very day that I'm starting a new project with a guitarist, aiming to up my game significantly and charting a course towards being a competent Jazz player.

Alas, I should leave in a few minutes for this inaugural rehearsal, so no time to delve into the book more than my precursory flip-through.

Many thanks, Bopland!!

+1 Under-Priced
The shipping to Hong Kong cost a few bucks more than the book.
I'm a pedagogue pack-rat and most of my books were bought on sale and they still cost more than double what "Jazz Licks" is being sold for.
As soon as I read in this thread there's the Treble Version, my mind is telling me it'd be good to be able to read treble clef as well – so that's a definite purchase for me down the pike.

+1 Open to Interpretation
It means you can work out of the book what you want/need and return to it at a later date with a different set of aspirations and goals ... dig as deeply as you are willing to work for it. The danger of a prescribed method, for me, is I may not think outside of the box if I'm spoon-fed a specific set of information.

Thanks again Bopland, a truly magnificent and magnanimous gift.
For my part, I promise to work hard and ensure that the book is not a dust collector, but rather a well-thumbed, dog-eared, smudged notes-in-the-margin tome of hard-learned edification.

@INTP
Thanks a lot for positive Amazon review. Please let me know if you even need extra copies, I will be happy to send them. Notation page was intentionally kept in treble clef and I will be glad to change it to bass clef if that way it is more convenient. Guys can you please share your thoughts, would you like the chords in Notation section to appear in bass clef?

@Feral Feline
Good to hear the book has arrived in time and much thanks for the feedback!

@luccabf
No, PDF version is not available and I am not sure it will appear in the nearest future.

I got my copy yesterday.

This is a great product and I have no complaints about paying the LOW LOW LOW price through Amazon.

I got home after a rehearsal last night and ran the first ii IV I lick threw half a dozen keys.

Very Cool and a lot of fun.

Between "Jazz Licks" and "The Serious Jazz Practice Book" I have a great practice plan for the next year.

Thanks BopLand!

As a friend of mine would say, "I got a golden bagel!!".

Meaning great find low price!

I bought it off Amazon UK. A very reasonable price. A very useful resource.
I haven't had a chance to dig deep into it but I presume licks in one key are not repeated in other keys? I wonder how the licks were selected for the various keys? For example, were 251 licks selected for specific keys because of range and/or fingering on double bass and/or bass guitar?

Thanks a lot to those who bought it and/or provided feedback!

@clodhopper
Most of the licks are not repeated thought some of them are. Initially there was treble clef edition of the same title: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] That was a collection of licks originally played on piano/brass/guitar. The idea behind bass clef version was to adapt licks to double bass/bass guitar range while keeping them as close to the source as possible.
