We're probably getting way too off topic, here, Andy, so I'd be happy to continue this discussion in a PM or two.

But, to reiterate, we are talking about the context of an on-going column, not a stand-alone comprehensive tome. Plenty of time (and issues) to discuss AC line quality further on down the road (and in fact, Tom has already been working on several articles on this topic).

And, if you have read prior installments of From the Bench (and some other reviews/articles), Tom has already touched on the subjects of harmonic content, string vibration, and the impact of a string moving through a magnetic field upon the waveform. Much more to come on all of these topics, as well.

Don't think wood trim on the amp's for me, but it (the amp) certainly has my interest! Jonathan, sent you a PM.

On another note, do you feel that the smaller tubes give up anything to the 6SL7 in detail or "3D" quality?

I've built identical preamps using 12ax7's and 6SL7's, and they are a lot closer than you would think. There is a video comparison on my YT page somewhere. So, as I always say, circuit design is KING!

This new front end is really cool, - the overall circuit/EQ topology is really unique - doesn't have a lineage to anything like a Fender, B15, or SVT. Love the tone/response of the 12au7. For this application, I don't think a 6SL7 would make it better - I tried it, and preferred the 12au7.

So I think I'm going to move this to a 16x12x4 chassis (the current one is 12x12x5) which will allow me to use the same front panel layout for a 2U rack format down the road (and avoid the Warwick aesthetics :) ). It also affords me a bit of space to further optimize the layout. I was playing with transformer location/orientations yesterday and with a bit more space, I can drop the noise floor even more.

Also going to 86 the aluminum mounting bracket for the tubes and move to a larger board so that I can mount the sockets directly to it similar to how I do in the BoT. It will be much tidier. Might move to a toroidal power tranny as well.

Alright, the rest of the week is busy so I've been working since I got home to get the amp ready for Reading PA this weekend. Over the past few days I've torn the whole thing apart several times over for various reasons as things were being optimized. So it's no longer pretty inside, but I'm going to gut the whole thing after this weekend and build it again in another case with a different board and power supply.

I did a couple more tweaks this evening to make the low end punchier and add some more harmonic character and I'm very happy where it sits at this point. My custom inductors will be here Thursday and I'll evaluate them before I tear it apart.

Thanks Mark!

I was actually going to do a long bar! - but it didn't work with some of the internals. Will have more flexibility with the new case. I think it's good to have some protection on the sides and rear of the unit.
