He was using the Optima strings when I saw him in 1998 (the show he signed my P bass at). They were selling the USED sets of strings for $48. He sounded great, but it was impossible to tell how much the strings had to do with it... because of the awesome bass, and Unbelievable rig. You really like them that much, eh?
If memory serves me they don't make them for 5 strings... correct?

Optima strings are expensive. Bass sets, here in the US that I have seen, typically go for around 75-80 dollars.

Brian May also uses them according to a couple of sites.

I'd love to have the chance to try a set out on my Buzzard, but for now I will be content with a good set of DR Rounds :p

USED for $48? they were nuts! the whole signal chain had a lot to do with it i think, so the strings probably were just the beginning of the sound.

when did Maximas stop production originally? im glad that i dont know where to get those strings, because the fact that John used them at some point would force me to buy a set.

you are lucky. i wish i could find a Buzzard in a store to play and maybe some of Johns magic would rub off on me.

i use the 2399 set myself, it is cheaper for me since i order from a dutch site, wich is in EU, and these strings are made in Germany :p

Hipshot X-tenders arent hard to install, they are just regular tuners with "something extra", as you know, John used x-tenders to, i think thats the coolest part of his Live at R.A.H. Solo :p

Yes, I remember (thanks) they were called Maximas back then... that's correct. I've looked around and can't find a 5 string set. The Maximas were the same story, just made for 4 string basses. Honestly, my LaBellas work fine and I'm not spending $20 A STRING for any bass of mine.
