Any thoughts on their Focusrite Scarlett Solo?

Haven´t tried it, but it will probably work fine. Another interface that looks nice is the Audient iD14. There are a lot of information about recording, interfaces, DAW etc. at Gearslutz.com. Do some searching over there. The only thing I would prefer to have on the interface is a line input without any preamp circuits connected, so all the gain settings are done from the Monique preamp. But this is not a must in any way. Preamps on cheap interfaces are pretty ok these days.

Yeah, I helped a fellow Monique guy get his recording system set up a few weeks back, and running the preamp gain on a Scarlett 2i2 all the way down and using the Balanced Level to control the input volume worked fine; when I'm tracking in my own the studio, it's always XLR out on Monique to XLR in on Apollo

A followup question. And again, please pardon my lack of knowledge. If I go this route and use the focusrite 2i2, am I bypassing my Baer stack of 212s? I would assume that this takes any cabs out of the loop? Thanks for your patience with me.

Unless you need the cabs to hear yourself, you can just unplug them or turn down the line out and you're good.

My real suggestion is that if you want the DI to sound great, use the best sounding interface you can if it's got onboard preamps like many do the better the interface the better the sound of your recording. If you're going board->interface->computer, then the best sounding board you can muster.

Yes, you only need 1 input to record 1 instrument. Scarlett 2i2 will work. With the small price differences on these interfaces I would at least have 2 inputs. And if you can afford it, the 6i6 can even record band rehearsals with multiple microphones. What I like with the 6i6 and 18i8 is that there are fixed line inputs on the back, so you can control the input direct from Monique´s balanced output volume control.

I'be been using a 2i2 and have issues with some of my DI levels being too high for that interface, resulting in clipping. I've seen a few other posts stating some users feel the headroom can be lacking with certain bass/pre combinations. Some of the bigger models can require a wall plug for power, instead of just the USB, and that can help with headroom.

Not everyone has issues with the 2i2. YMMV. Just suggesting to keep an eye out... well, an ear out

FYI - I borrowed a MOTU 828 mkIII and have been pretty happy with some of the features and headroom, though it does get angry when certain other USB MIDI controllers are plugged into the laptop ports. That's another thread, and way more interface than you are after.

Either your time is up or your week is super long, Jule. Wanna introduce us to Simone? Or did she indeed 'suck'?

A small preamp that's a sister to Monique would be a good thing. I have some gigs these days where provided backline is fairly highly er...suggested. Possible also a fly-gig or two in the future. Would be great to have this on hand to make nice with the various setups that I'm sometimes faced with if it provides a similar 'end user experience'.

I would hope that it has the bells and whistles that I need for IEM use. The Mesa Subway DI has the perfect amount of options needed for my gig... Hopefully Jule's will be similar.

For instance when I don't use an amp and cab, I use the 1/4" preamp out of the Mesa DI to feed my IEM mixer. Then the XLR DI feeds the house.

When I use an amp and cab (I still use IEM's with this setup), I do the same as above but add the thru out to feed the amp I'm using.

Yeah, nothing even near that now. I'm guessing there's a bunch more proto-work to be done in terms of the 'tweaks' Jule mentions. From experience with is work, it's not going to be a 'budget' piece of gear, but you'll totally get what you pay for.

I did a quick side by side with a couple different Noble preamps that a local friend has. They both sounded great but were no competition for the actual Monique...not that it's a direct or fair comparison for a pedal style preamp to be up against a full fledged Mo.
