Jule Amps Monique part 5

Does anyone have any recordings of how the Monique sits in the mix within the context of a modern heavy rock band or am I better off looking at the JGR 6SL7 for that context? I've heard quite a few recordings of the Monique in jazzier settings (thank you nostatic!) and absolutely am in love with the tone, but I am not sure how well it would translate into a rock context. For reference - I'm currently using a Mesa 400+ for my live rig

I'm saddened by the fact that my poweramp (and therefore my Monique as they're racked together) is being co-opted for PA use this weekend.

We did a run through last night with my IPR driving the front end and it worked fantastically...but I was saddened to not have my Monique and use my LMII backup instead. I still think its a great little amp, but no comparison to the FUN that the Monique brings to the table. I missed that punchy spring that it has.

I have used the 400+ since the late 80's and picked up a rack mount Monique and I sold both 400+'s and have been happy with Monique for over a year now. In fact I upgraded to the smoking hot Bamboo unit. The 400+ is a great amp and there are some features I miss but the DI on the 400+ is not great at all. Plus it is easy to transport and now have 2000 watts lol. Here is a like to our page all tracks are direct in from monique. couple pedals off the board and that's it.Invalid Link Removed

Wow! I think these samples of yours answer the question. :D As I think of it, they answer a whole lot of questions.

Very, very cool. Thank you.

I sold my Mesa M9 and D-180 as soon as I did my first gig with Monique.

I play mostly 80-90's hard rock but Monique sounds great for everything from the Eagles, 70's funk, 60's classics to Ozzy, Pearl Jam, Metallica, STP, Buckcherry, etc.

Monique does not do heavy gain IMO.... I use a Darkglass B3K for overdrive/distortion which pairs with it perfectly.

I decided to swap some tubes out the other day, (replaced my vintage Tesla EZ81 with the stock EZ81 and replaced the stock 12AU7 with a '71 RCA 12AU7) and apparently I did something to cause the DI out to not work anymore. Must have bumped something with my screwdriver....but I'm taking it into the shop to get it checked out. My Minnie also has a broken board inside, and I can hear some piece banging around in there. That can't be good. I guess taking it all over the world has it's cons....but on the plus side, Monique sounds even better. Not sure which tube is making the difference, if not both together, but there's a bit more physical thump happening now. Hopefully it'll be back in action soon....I'm gonna need it!

The 'better' part would be the rectifier. I switched mine out for vintage NOS Mullard and it was too soft. The modern one that came with it was WAY better. Much more punch and life.

Did you try just putting the old 12AU7 BACK in? Maybe you have a bad tube.

can't be that cause the driver tube affects the 1/4" line out as well, right? And it's having NO issue sending signal to Minnie....only the XLR out seems dead....

Half of it is used for the DI, half of it is used for the line. So theoretically, it could have a bad 'half'. That's why 12A-7 tubes often have two sets of testing numbers.

It just seems like before you send it away and have someone bench it and pay for it, check out the tube again. If you put the old one back and it works fine, you know you have a bad tube. If you put it back in and you still have this problem, you know you did some other damage.

My Monique had some esoteric tube problems early on and I didn't have any spare 6SL7's to test with and it took several trips across the country to get it sorted out...and it was just a tube that was randomly and intermittently doing some strange things.

totally. I was just gonna take it to my guy down the street (I live in Brooklyn). Def not worth sending it back to Jule for a small little hiccup. I've actually NEVER had a tube issue with my Monique and it's almost 4 years old now! After about a year I swapped out the stock 6SL7s with some early 60s GEs as well as the rectifier with a NOS 50s Tesla. No issues. Eventually got the upgrade with the AU7 but didn't think of swapping it with this NOS RCA until now. I didn't realize the driver tube had any involvement in the DI out....if that's the case then it could very likely be the tube....bummer, I paid a nice amount of money for it! But thanks for the input!

I've got a GE grey plate 12AU7 in mine. I think they're great tubes without being a 'cork-sniffing' name checking favorite...aka cheap but good sounding. I've run a a few different ones along the way, a JAN/NOS RCA 1940's blackplate 6SL7 that was awesome for a short while before getting ugly. It now resides happily in the V2 position. I had another non-JAN blackplate RCA to replace it, and ended up liking what a Tung Sol brown base did for me instead. Its been there for about a year I'm guessing and I'm not having any troubles. I was surprised at how big a difference in 'feel' that the rectifier tube had.

yeah def noticeable difference with the rec tube. I've been perfectly happy with my GE 6SL7s but maybe I'll check out the Tungsol....

The Tung Sol isn't as sweet or rich in the deep lows, but it trades it for more going on in the mids and a bit more punch to my ears. The GE's I've tried are almost always a very close runner up to the RCA's...just not quite as 'much'. They're big and smooth and rich anyway, and can be had for a fraction of the cost.
