Jule Amps Monique part 5

If you're working with Skip, it means you're also at a booth full of Dave Green's cabs. We know that's a great combination! :)

It is not for the cacophony, or even the foot abuse, that one chooses to go to NAMM. It is for the good time with Skip, Chris et al. I admit prejudice, but the sound and experience at the Circle K Booth is always great.

I am grateful to Skip for including Monique.

Finally powered up my new Monique/Minnie setup.
It sounds absolutely wonderful!
When I first got the Monique it had almost no signal coming from it. It turned out it had a broken connection inside, probably caused by some rough handling on it's way from California to Norway.
Jule offered to send me a new amp, or to pay a local tech to fix it.
Excellent customers service! But with some e-mail consulting and voltage checking, Jule pointed me to where the problem had to be. (Even more excellent customers service...) When it was found it was an easy fix. 30 second job with a soldering iron. :)

My previous Monique rack-mount got stolen while I was on tour last fall, so it really feels good to have it back. It was an easy decision to order my new Monique with the bamboo enclosure. It's so beautiful I sometimes forget to play, just sitting there staring at the amp... :smug:

Comparing a D-Monique Tardis to a Monique + Minnie 800D, is there or should there be any difference in the tone?

I see one advantage of the Monique + Minnie 800D is the flexability of using a different pre or power amp with one of the M sisters. Other than that, is there a particular reason to go with either the D-Monique Tardis or the separates?

woah what's that cube-cage one under Monique?!

The mythical 40W tube power amp prototype. I met up with Jule and his wife last night for dinner pre-NAMM and brought home some test mules. The big black box is a 40W tube power amp with a pair of EL-34s. The bamboo box is a class D power amp that will do 600W into 2 ohms. Already have talked about different possible form factors for the 600W amp. I plugged in both last night and there is some good stuff happening.

I've been talking with Jule about a tube power section for some time now but actually making Moniques/etc has kept it a side project. I'm going to beat on these and test in various situations to give a bunch of data/feedback. I can say that the tube amp (I call her Elly) is interesting. Plugging a bass direct in doesn't give a lot of overall volume, but my wife immediately said, "that sounds really hi-fi." Running Monique into Elly is much louder (we'll see if it is "loud enough") and way thicker. Very different than Minnie.

On a more important note, Jule and his wife are wonderful people and we had great conversation over dinner. Jule is always thinking of new tweaks and ways to get at the sounds. If only we had a few clones of him ;)

Cool stuff!

I have been talking to Jule about a reasonably priced poweramp for a long time. I am hoping to get my hands on one of his 600w amps soon. Did you compare it with Minnie? Be very interested in your feedback on that.

The 40w poweramp is cool but I find Monique/Minnie does a great job of low volume. I don't see me in the studio much in the near future, but it would likely be a great piece of gear if I was.

I've been wondering this too. I see a lot of the Monique players start with a rackmount or tardis, but eventually most go to the dovecage/bamboo Monique with a separate Minnie.

I see the ease of the De-Monique, but if the Dovecage and minnie sounds significantly different/better then I can see the intrigue.

I honestly think the dovecage/Minnie is a classy looking setup!!

The Minnie with a DC or Bamboo do look super cool.

My gigging rig is a DC/Minnie and I love it because it looks amazing, is compact, light and obviously sounds great. I honestly have never had so many musicians approach me about an amp in my 25+ years of gigging. It generates a ton of interest.

I also have a rack/poweramp setup that I keep at my rehersal space. Heavier, bigger and definitely more mainstream/boring looking. But more durable and roadworthy.

I like the idea of the De-Monique, but I prefer the look of the DC/Minnie. I don't think they would find much different in any case.

exactly!! I read on the website that the dovecage, minnie AND bag are right at 14 lbs...that's CRAZY!

I'm really wanting a Dovecage/minnie setup for my next rig!! :hiding:

Cool. glad to see Jule finally got it out. I was afraid it wouldn't be loud enough beyond studio stuff, so I've been bugging him to make one with those new KT120 power tubes. I've been begging him to build me one single unit (basically a Monique and KT120 powered "Elly" in one) for quite some time now but I know he's swamped making Moniques these days. Gotta say I'm a bit jealous you get to do the testing!! :spit::bawl::D

^^^ (except I don't have the second rack unit)

I told Jule last night that if it wasn't for the dove cage form factor, I likely never would have noticed Monique and wouldn't have checked it out. Of course this is a case where the beauty is far deeper than the skin, but the aesthetic caused me to take notice. After all, who needs an all-tube preamp/DI? Turns out evidently I do :D

Jule mentioned the KT120s and that might be the hot ticket but at some point weight starts to become an issue. My hunch is that the 40W is loud enough for my jazz gigs, and certainly would work in an "unplugged" type situation. With a loud drummer - we'll see. It also feels a bit different than Minnie, and you can push thing into clipping a couple of different ways though that can be a feature rather than a bug. I'll know more once I get it onto the bandstand as well as more hours in the studio.
