Jule Amps Monique part 5

So I was talking with Jule in passing and after something like 200+ gigs and thousands of hours of Monique operating time he admonished me that maybe, just maybe I should do a tube refresh. You may know that my somewhat paranoid somewhat uptight self has a set of replacements on hand 'in case of'.

So last night I decided it would be a good night to pour a rum/lime/nutmeg cocktail and pull apart my rack. My ol' 1992 SKB rack was also starting to get some squeaks, so a good time to tighten down all the fasteners, check for dust in enclosures and maybe take a few pictures.

So here's the rack before I pull it apart. You can see roughly what my base settings are, minus the power amp, which is pulled back.

Ok...So first off, It's been too long since I went through and just tightened and reviewed. In the words of the classic movie The Breakfast Club, "The world is an imperfect place, screws fall out all the time." And in a high-vibration setting...all the more so.

Indeed, missing face- plate screw by the power switch, and there were a few in this state:

Ok...so I've been fairly 'superstitous about not messing with this Mo'. If it ain't broke, don't go messing with it has been my stance. So I've only been in this one once (had a grumbly 6SL7 that I pulled for one that was a bit less noisy) and I hadn't been in at all since it was given a fresh faceplate and a refresh from Jule. Still the same high quality sparse goodness we love! Without a fan, no dust to blow around inside, either.

While I'm at it, I had to pull the power amp and check the screws on it and the rack anyway...thought I'd open the M2500 up so y'all could see the high-tech-high-power wonderworld inside. You may note that the power supply side of the amp has 2 sets of open sockets for additional amp units. Yep. It's beefy enough to run no less than THREE 2500w RMS amplifiers. Also, that's a 30amp fuse for protection (the unit has a user accessible 20A fuse on the back too).

You can also see the dual fans (one side, one back) which are controlled by a variable speed control. I have never turned it down from 100% though. It's not super loud when they're running full out anyway.

We can try to package 2500 watts of amplification in a minimalist fashion, but the thing still ends up looking like a beast under the hood. IMHO. I have to keep reminding myself that these same amps run concert halls and such, where I suppose real estate is more readily available that in our Bass World.

Those faceplate screws are black 6:32 flathead screws. Be nice if they were white, but that ain't happening. Do you need me to send a few?

Yes...the M2500 is a pretty impressive beast. It's like a 70's muscle car...where they decided that more power outweighed aerodynamics. ;) You can push anything through the air if you have enough grunt behind it.

That's a cool lil' guy...is this the direction you're looking at rather than the solid-state unit you had been messing with, or is this just a bit of tangential research and design?

I've built up for myself a 2500 and included 2 more 700s. Just to see. Remember when Buckaroo Banzai first went through the mountain?

The Solid State (FET) project was good enough, which is of course not good enough.

This "cool lil' guy" pleases me.

Workload (grateful I am) precludes finishing the technical side final details immediately, and then comes the packaging. But it lives. Occasionally dream melancholy images of designing for a company big enough to have an R&D department/budget, but I snap out of it quickly when I realize I'd have to go to a meeting. ;)

I hardly ever use this term, partly because I'm not a native Minnesotan, and partly because it's a superlative of sorts, but OOFTA that's beautiful

This was just expedient for development and proof of technical concept. Got some fun ideas for a final package. Maybe a miniature Dove Cage? (Sparrow!) It will require getting together with the good folk of KC Sheetmetal in San Jose to pull ideas from them too. They are great people to work with and largely responsible for what has come to be known as the Dove Cage.

Just thinking, may be a terrible idea, but what if, when it gets close to the packaging stage I set up a Google Hangout to discuss what needs to be where with a few of y'all interested parties? Purely selfish on my part since I'm dummer'nastump as to pedal-ish things. No advantage for anyone to participate except to know you had your say. :)

I think my company has work done by KC Sheet Metal. We build microwave amplifiers and KC makes the rack enclosures for the amplifiers.

The Monique has that tube 'x factor' while retaining but enhancing the character of any instrument that you run through it. The EQ is superb and the best I've personally experienced. Very pleased with it :)
