Jule Amps Monique part 5

Don't worry about this type of foolishness, just start building 700 Combos so I can buy one!:p
Looks like the Stand-Alone 700 Watt Amp (to sit beneath your Dove Cage or Bamboo) will be out before the Combo Monique 700. I'm having some stand-alone samples built up now by the good people who make the Dove Cage chassis for me. Then I'll have the first stand-alone batch produced. The Combo follows that.

That's great news Jule. ;) I may have to wait a bit until I have the resources to 'support' the endeavor (if its kinda sorta in the ballpark I estimate), but keep the idea on a back burner... Because I'm definitely interested.

It would be in the same wattage ballpark as what I'm now using for most gigs (what reads like ~430wrms/525w "repetitive burst') per cab , and it seems like the 'other benefits' would make it worth it. If I do need the 'huge' power I sometimes pull out (1500w per cab, but I'm not really hitting them with that much, just providing headroom), I could certainly switch to my IPR.

What's you're vision of this? Black box, no controls on the front but a pilot light? Or would you consider putting attenuator knobs like a more traditional power amp?

If there are no attenuators, I'd love to see power switch or switches on the rear and the amps 'internally' jumped so I wouldn't need the 'through' cable I now use to get signal from one amp side to the other. *If there are attenuators, they should probably be big and archaic and scary looking. ;)
Attenuators for sure. Level controls will also be on the Stand-Alone 700 watt amp. Let me get existing orders shipped and in the hands of these good folks who have been waiting way to long. Then we can talk about this.

But it can be done.

I still think we could put that Radial in a 2U with an amp too. It is all fun.

Awesome, Jule. No hurry. I sort of have a ballpark idea of what you'd charge, given the pricing on the other stuff you do, and I don't have the expendable fun money at the moment anyway. So take your time and we'll discuss at a later date. :)

Posting this to give a sense of what Monique sounds with Piezos on a fretless. Mo was run through the power section of an AI Focus and then into a Phil Jones Bass C8. Miked for the recording, not direct. My band is called The Worst, so take it for what it is. (And yes, I am The Worst bass player)

My first gig with the Monique was last night at Bowery Ballroom. It was pretty excellent! The backline cab for the night was a Heritage 6x10 and I was powering it with a Crest ProLite 2.0 in bridged mode (2000 watts ftw). On the floor, I had an FEA DE/CL always on and switched between a BDPG, TAFM and Magnetar throughout the set. During setup, the soundguy tried to force a DI box on me. I refused it and went with the DI on the Monique. The sound was amazing. My friends that were familiar with my tone using a Mesa 400+ all complimented how much more clarity the Monique has. This preamp continues to impress me more and more each time I plug into it!

Any time I've had guys want to use 'their' DI box, I mention my rig features a 'studio quality tube DI' for such purposes. I've only gotten push back once. He switched it out 2 songs into our set, then switched it back 1 song later. He said he was getting some 'crackling' in the FOH and thought it was my DI. He found it didn't fix the problem and then said that he switched it back because mine sounded much better.

Yeah, they were using a passive Radial DI at the venue. They let me use it only after briefly being reassured that the amp was of a higher quality than their box. I'm in no way knocking the crew at Bowery (they were absolutely top notch); the Mo is just an unfamiliar piece of gear to them.

Glad to hear it :)

Their initial reluctance, I can understand. They are always time pressed, quality pressed, and largely un-recognized for their work. They are another batch of un-sung heroes and heroines of the music business. But when we can give them something better, they are quite grateful.

Well, there are many mediocre DI's on the backs of amps...so when you point to the back of your 'amp setup' they tend to get the wrong idea.

True story. This year: A very well known player (world wide) had his brand new Monique in the studio as new tracks were being cut. The folks behind the console said, "OK. Out of time. It sounds good, but lets go to what we know and get this done." Everyone said they agreed. Cables were to be switched. Movements were made.

The song was performed.

Again from the good folks behind the console, "Wow! That sounds great. That's a keeper."

Then, from the other side of the glass, "Oh. Sorry. We're still hooked up to Monique."

Big time +1 there. These guys were doing 10 minute changeovers for 7 bands on a bill there. The gimmick for the night was 7 bands playing 20 minute sets chosen via lottery on stage. The crew had everyone changing over with time to spare for basic soundchecks. They were just going for what would help them keep things super quick. They did appreciate it from what I overheard.

Not just that, lots of guys in the NYC scene have very beat up amps from carting them around on the subway. Even if the DI is quality, many are have issues from being beat up so much.

Sounds like 'line check' rather than sound check to me. We're famous for being a fast change over band, given we have between 6 and 8 people. I can put my amp up and be set in less than 5 minutes.
Whoops, 100% right, line check. Sorry, I get all derpy on less than 4 hours of sleep. I wish we could be that fast. Having a singer pull double duty with rhythm guitar and keys slows us down a lot. 6-8 people? Damn, that is a crowded stage!
