Jule Amps Monique part 5

Is the Tardis version rack mountable? It seems to be the same preamp as the regular version just lighter in weight?

I would guess you could rig it, but there is a reason there are two different models. If it were as easy as tossing ears on the Tardis, I would not understand why Jule would bother building a different model. I know they are different materials as well, I am not sure that the Tardis is is designed for a rack given cooling needs.

That's not an option. I'm not interested in using a 4U rack for something that's only 2U.

Otherwise it's the same preamp? Is there any difference between the Dovecage or the rack/desktop version?

Maybe I'm missing something but I can't find much info on the website about the various models.

Dovecage = Bamboo = Rackmount = Tardis as far as actual circuitry goes? Just different housing?

Tardis = Non rackmountable, lighter version of the Rackmount?

The housings are the only difference. The wiring in the preamp section is the same. I remember Jule saying that the slightest change in wire length or placement can change the entire unit. He spends a lot of time making sure they are consistent.

The aluminum of the tardis is meant to dissipate the heat, I do not think it is vented like the rack. It is also not as heavy. The rack is a steel chasis.

Bamboo and Dovecage are also identically wired. The shell it the only difference.

***Edit***

The Tardis is vented

I have the Tardis, and asked Jule some of these same questions about it sometume back. I'll answer to the best of my recollection and let him correct me if I'm wrong.

Circuitry-wise, all versions are identical. Same tubes, tone, and knobs doing the same things in each.

The rack version is steel, Tardis aluminum. Dimensions might be slightly different and no ears on the Tardis. The Tardis is by no means flimsy, but the steel rack mount would be a little sturdier. The Tardis is lighter, but if you want to mount one in a standard rack, the extra weight of the steel version would, IMO, be more than offset by not having to jerry rig a mount/ears. That said, I don't guess that would be rocket science.

We're you using one of these??

Where do I find one of these? I've needed one for some time.

I've had Monique now for a year and 4 months. I figured it was time for an update. I posted an update on my blog:

The blog is just a reflection of my time with Monique, my current thoughts, and what I have learned over this time. I hope you enjoy it!

Nice look.

The only thing I find surprising is that your starting point is to run the sensitivity all the way up. I've played around with it (now for nearly 2 years) and rarely have I really landed there. My useable gigging sweep is between 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. Before 10 it gets a little too clean and cold for me and beyond 2 it's just too crunched.

Actually, I didn't start out with the Sensitivity full up (if I posted that somewhere, it was a mistake). However, I did start out with WAY too much Sensitivity! Way too much.
Your setting are representative of what I now use. At least, they are very close. I now range between 9:00 - 2:00 (depending on bass, cab, gig & song). I find that I can get away with much more Sensitivity with the Jazz bass. But when we are doing rock covers, I can push it up with the P bass too.

Sometimes I'm like that, just have too much on my mind and find myself multi-tasking too much. Then I have those Duh moments and everything becomes clear! Kinda like where I describe my last gig with the unruly stage. Man, it was super boomy! The kick drum was just massive. My bass was too. I EQ'd Monique and got better then I thought; "dummy, you have an fdeck in your rack, USE IT! Click, everything was fine. I guess it's a sign of my age. :D

Thanks for taking time to read the review!

My mis-reading upon looking it back. I find that in use (aka on stage or even in rehearsal) the sensitivity control is about the only one I use on Monique. Once my ballpark EQ is set any micro-adjustments are made on my bass and any 'feel' adjustments are made by Sensitivity. Songs that I want a really thick heavy 70's lo-fi roots n' dub sound I roll it up and into that 2 o'clock range. But if I want something that's more tonally 'coherent' and clear I roll it back.

So, a track like this I have the sensitivity up a bit (forgive the overall on these, they're practice recordings):

While one like this I may have it pulled back:
