Jule Amps Monique part 5

(<---With apologies to Jule and mgrewe12. I think the input's a great feature and am thankful that you thought of us to include it, Jule... I just can't hear "sound persons" and "total control" together without Orwellian overtones - kidding/not really. The giant effects loop hadn't occurred to me, I admit.)

No worries MarkA. I took no offense and saw the joke in it. The reason I asked Jule is, instead of being controlled by FOH through the mains, I would be controlled by FOH through my rig (which handles bass frequencies better than the mains). So essentially treating my rig as a third PA speaker that is just for bass, but would serve double duty monitoring.

The multiple PA rigs must be carry over from my fascination with the Wall of Sound.

Well, I was speaking a bit tongue in cheek, and certainly quoting selectively for effect (reality TV editing!) but I would have to really trust a soundman before I would let that happen. Like really trust him. Or her. Like, really a lot. The point is, there would have to be trust involved. We would have to trust each other. There would have to be an understanding. I know that you say you've got my best interests - our best interests - at heart, but I'd have to really know it, you know what I mean? I'm not sure I'm even ready to think of an "us" in those terms yet. It's not that you're not great - you are, totally - I'm... I'm just not sure I'm ready for this stage in our relationship, yet.

I'm sure somewhere on a FoH forum this conversation is happening in the other direction. FoH trusting us...

Too much TV? ;)

It was that interchange, player - soundperson that was a large part of the spark for Monique originally. Visualize dark, rather musty drinking establishment in he San Fernando Valley, a few scattered patrons and a person behind the console who saw their job as continual twiddling. So yes, you can let the sound person feel they have complete control any time you wish.

There is some interesting Monique work going on right now with music for movies. Difficult environment to introduce new equipment. The attitude being, "We've been doing this for a long time, and this is what we use." Reasonable. All we need to do is make that producer/soundperson look good. As long as they are in control.

LOL...!

I'll also point out that people know I like a bit of excess. Last night I was curious and ran my Monique into my Kern double pre-amping. Interesting levels of tube excess. Very different preamps and imagine a tone that is bigger and deeper than the Monique.

FWIW, that is (or was; I need to repair my stereos) my basic setup in my home stereo. Custom tube preamp (with a variable voltage tube power supply) into 1960s Fisher integrated stereo or 1960s Harman Kardon receiver. What a sound. I see no reason why that approach shouldn't sound great for instrument amplification, too, especially if a Monique is one of the preamps.

Stacked! Today I received a mint LDS 28WET3W cabinet (2 x 8", variable 5", variable tweeter; 450 w, 8 ohms). As the cabinet acclimated to indoors, I took a long lunch break and rescued my Acoustic Image Focus 1 Series III from storage. I have other amps and cabinets in storage. But I wanted something "Monique sized" and good for playing in an apartment situation. So I went for the LDS cabinet.

Though I played only briefly and at low volumes, in my first try today the new stack sounded good. :D After a while, I boosted the volume of the 5" speaker, but that was it. No other tweaking. Just the old Precision and the new stack. It was great to play not in headphones.

I think they all look good together, these three. In addition to the preamp fitting perfectly atop the amp, the grilles on the Monique and the cabinet match.

What a Sweeeeet set-up! Absolutely top-shelf amplification.

With regard to using the AI as your power amp have you tried using the power amp in / effects return rather than the instrument input? Any difference or preference?

Hello, Peter. Yes, I used to do that and it works fine. If you are driving the AI with a Monique or other external preamp, a reason to use the AI's instrument input, even if its EQ is flat, is to be able to use its filter feature: either

1. in notch mode for either
a. taming feedback with an acoustic instrument, or
b. compensating for a speaker cabinet's resonance in itself or in the context of a room, or

2. in cut mode (high pass) for rolling off bass frequencies below the lowest frequency a speaker cabinet can handle usefully.

Case 1a is not a concern of mine now, but 1b and 2 are compelling. 1b can be a deal with the devil, but it works. 2 is great since it helps you get the maximum useful output from most cabinets.

Best,

Snaxster

Thanks snaxter very thoughtful comments. I own a focus and do play DB so 1a could be a concern to me. I don't own a Monique but do love my ampeg tube head for electric bass.

In thinking how this would be useful to me. I'd likely continue to use the focus for DB and only add Monique for electric.

Is there a tonal difference with the EQ set flat vs the return and level control?

Oh, right, and this: I would love to hear DB played through a Monique. If I played DB, I would try to audition one. Take it from a vintage tube collector freak (me), the octal tubes have a distinctive sound. What they do to bass frequencies is quite different from what miniature tubes do. Spatial in mono; fathomless, relaxed bass response; slow, tactile overall response. Too classy. Octals don't sound better than miniatures, just different. But it's a sound I think would lend itself well to DB.

I know Mitch has a Monique and a double bass, maybe he'll chime in. I am curious too. ;)

Thus far I prefer using my countryman to my REDDI with DB and my focus to the V4B when it comes to my particular DB and pickup. It's certainly has much to do with controlling the lows and the fdeck HPF can help. That being said I'm curious about Monique.

My pleasure, Peter. Probably it is indistinguishable in a live setting at the least. I'll do an A/B test on Friday, then let you know what I hear. :)

Peter, I just tried it and found the AI's return input to be at a much lower volume. It's possible that its preamp input is hotter sounding, too; a bit more sizzle and presence. (But I discovered that the return jack on my AI is scratchy, so pending me cleaning it I'll assume that may be a contributor.) Impedance matching could be an issue.

About the volume difference: for example, all other settings staying constant (including the AI's effects loop level at maximum), when using the AI's preamp input, the Monique's line level was between 9 and 10 o'clock. To approximate the net volume when using the AI's return input, the Monique's line level had to be at 12 o'clock.

I want to connect monique into tube headphones amp/dac (woaudio wa7tp) for night-practice/recording etc. Should I use xlr-rca cable or xlr-2rca y-cable? Thanks

For a headphone amp, I use The Enabler. I send the Monique's 1/4" line out to The Enabler's 1/4" instrument input. This is easy to use, sounds great, and is very flexible (for matching levels).

If your question is about which Monique output to use, I think you should try each to see which sounds and works best for you.

But if your question is about what kind of cable to use, I think that will be determined by what jacks the two devices have.
