Jule Amps Monique part 5

I originally ran Monique into the fx return of my PUMA 900 and it sounded great. I also tried it in the fx return of the GK mb800 as well. Did it sound as good as it did running through the minnie or m700? No. But it still sounded a lot better than other setups I had. As long as your current amp can handle a preamp into the fx return, and considering what you will be using it for, it probably would be fine, but it really depends on the amp you are using. What amp are you currently using?

Thanks,
I've been using a small micro vr for a while. With only 1 cab it's perfect for practice, home studio! I've been looking to upgrade for the past few months, but I had no idea with what. I'm looking for really good quality sound, light weight and I don't need much power. I almost grabbed a TH500 a few times but I don't think it's what I'm looking for.

My new plan would be to grab Monique and find a really good power amp that will pair up nicely with whatever new cab I end up with later this year.

Eric

Edit: Tonight I'll try to plug my B7K in the effects return, it should give me a good idea!

Back in the beginning, I think Jule designed and envisioned bass players using the Monique in front of their regular bass amps, or through the loop. So yes, it will work for you. What I found out is that the Monique sounds so fantastic without another amp's 'color' getting in the way of what it's doing. So...it became pretty clear early on with the unit, was that my real job was to find a way to get other things out of the way. I think that more and more players realized this upon having their hands on Monique, which is why so many people are using pre/power and/or the reason why the 700 came to be.

I agree 1000 percent with this. It will absolutely make Monique shine to her fullest.

But if you are only going to use it for home noodling use, I wouldnt drop the extra bread, unless money isn't a big deal.

When my power amp was in the shop getting upgrades I used my LMII backup through the loop without a problem (within the operating specs of the LMII, that is).

I'll be running her through the power amp of my SWR Bass 350 at first (as well as into the PA), or perhaps my QSC 850, but I intend to use that for my Taurus IIIs.
I'll likely add a lightweight power amp (that QSC is a heavy 4 space brute) later when the money is available.

If you're ok with rack mount power amps, the crest prolite 2.0 is a great, lightweight, affordable option. I have one and it works really well with Monique.

I have to give praise where it is due.

I bought a used Monique/Minnie, loved it, sounds amazing. Had a slight issue over the weekend so I emailed Jule yesterday afternoon on what my soundman thought it could be (who loved the overall sound btw). Jule emails me back with a detailed solution a few hours later! That is just awesome customer service from a guy who loves doing what he does. This level of quality and dedication to your product is such a rarity these days. Can't say enough great things about the product customer service (even though it was bought used in the secondary market!).

Thanks again Jule,

Don

I used mine for the first time the other night at a gig. I had it plugged into the FX return of my GB SMax 12.2 into a CN212.

I found it really dark and had to crank up the treble to get into the ballpark of what I like. I need to mess with it more.

Line: 12:00 pushed in
Treble: 3:00
Mid: 12:30-1
Bass: 11:30
Sensitivity: 3:00 pushed in

Any ideas? Getting a separate power amp isn't really in the cards, especially if it's not going to be all that different.

Running it as a DI into my recording rig sounded awesome...

Yeah I secure everything. Unfortunately the cabs I use do not have side handles to secure to. So I usually gaff the handles of Monique to my M700 power amp. I loop my instrument cable through the handle of monique and I also gaff the instrument cable to the side of my cabinet. I also spot gaff the instrument cable on the floor by the cabinet. I know its a bit over cautious but my singer is like a bull in a china shop so I'm always worried he is going to knock something over.
Good idea. I heard from a customer last week that when his go-to amp quit on him he went out and emergency bought a DB751. First gig, it vibrated off the cabinet, and fell back on the power cord, severing it. Large blue flash. Yup. Watch that stuff moving around.

Dave,

I can tell you first hand I have had different tonal results with different power sections, especially using an fx return as a power amp for Monique. IME, this is what I found, and all of these setups I felt were great to gig with for me….

Monique > fx return of Puma 900 - dark sounding

Monique > fx return GK mb800 - brighter than Puma 900

Monique > Minnie - not as bright as gk mb800, but punchier and heft behind notes

Monique > Crest Prolite 2.0 - tonally in same ballpark as minnie but a bit more heft in the notes

Monique > M700 - Crisp, Clear, more top end, heft, and punchier than the above. Mids seem to have a bit more definition and growl.

- Obviously the above is just my opinion and I'm sure there will be different results here. I'm also using Hathor 1203's with it. Never tried it with a Berg CN212.

I know you said a new amp isn't in the cards for you, but my fav combination is Monique / M700 by far.

Perhaps if it doesn't fully work for you maybe it would be helpful to add a parametric eq to your setup?

I don't know about a Shuttlemax, but I did run my Monique into the effects return of my GBE 1200. That power section hit really hard, but it was rolled off up top (strange since the GBE itself isn't). Monique isn't, in my opinion, a bright sounding pre, but it is brighter through a dedicated power amp than through the GBE. If you dig the direct signal, you'd likely dig it through a Pro Lite, which is a respectable poweramp and a good value. I've never played the M700, but I've only read positive reports.

Is there anywhere around where you could try a poweramp? Any friends or acquaintances who'd let you have access to one for a bit?

I don't remember the back panel of the Shuttlemax that well, but the GBE has three effects loops: one for each channel and a master loop. Eq works on channel loops, not on Master (I think). Master loop sounded better to me, but others let me use the amp EQ if I wanted it.

A few quick things.

1

I also bought my Monique used. Now I try to figure out ways I can give Jule money ;) he really does go above and beyond.

2

I have tried Monique into a dozen effects returns and I can say I think there is a very noticeable difference not only between the different amps, but also when using a dedicated power amp. Beyond that I can say that there are also noticeable differences between different power amps.

There were tones I liked more than others, but most of those were with a dedicated power amp. The best result I got from an effects return was from a PJBM500. I liked my Minnie more than any effects return I used. But.....IMHO the M700 is the one to rule them all.

Monique and the M700 do well at low volume. You have the added options of driving Monique a little, and working the volume on the M700 or visa versa. The trick is a highly efficient cab. The M700 will blow the doors off most cabs, but it is so even and transparent that it has authority from the moment the sound becomes audible. So with a low volume cab you should be able to dial into it pretty well between it and Monique.

Hi,
I happened to « discover » Monique a few weeks ago while browsing the dingwall forum. Wow!

I was wondering, I mostly play at home, either in my studio or whenever we throw a little house party. So I don’t need a lot of power, but I realy want my stuff to sound good! How would Monique + M700 sound at lower volumes? Paired let’s say with my small 2x10 cab (SVT210AV) when I practice or with both of my 2x10 together when things get a tad out of hand with my two brothers wailing on their guitars?

Should I try to find a power amp that’s more in the 400-500 range? If so, suggestions?

Would it be completely ******** if I just plugged Monique in the effects return of my current amp, effectively bypassing it’s pre-amp? Until I find something better? I plan on replacing the Cabs sometime this year, not sure with what yet, but fearful is intriguing

Thanks Eric
Not a bad idea at all. It is about enjoying what you have to show up with. That was one of the original ideas for the origin of Monique. I would be disappointed if Monique only brought pleasure with one or two amps or cabinets.
