Jule Amps Monique part 5

Just got word from Jule and his partner in crime Marsha that my green-eyed Monique is on it's way back to me. I sent it across country back on March 5th to meet her maker and have a once over...It's been a tough couple weeks even without gigging. I've become so used to having such a great sounding and feeling preamp that even switching back to the legendary Kern IP-777 for a few weeks has been a struggle. I can't wait to get everything back in place.

Since there are a few folks in here that are somewhat close. We are having a gtg this weekend in Austin. Sunday the 29th at the Oltorf Music Lab. 2pm to 8pm. Of course Monique and an M700 will be hanging. I have a Bunch of MAS MVW cabs, also Duke was kind enough to send us a Hathor 1203 for the weekend. Lots of other cool toys will be around. No pressure, fun chill out time. Come see us if you can.

Got my Monique last night. I spent some time with it today. It's a really good piece of equipment. I'm using it into the power amp section of a Glockenklang Bass Art Classic -- which is my favorite amp to-date. The Glock has a true power-amp in jack with a switch to activate it -- so it's an easy set-up with no plugging/un-plugging.

The sensitivity knob is great. I'm not sure exactly what it's doing but the tone does seem to get bigger and edgier the higher you go. I've been using it around 9-10 o'clock.

I'm not sure I'd want to lug this and the Glock to a gig and I don't want to spring for a Minnie right now. Is anyone using any of the cheaper micro heads as power? I was thinking I could pick up a Markbass F500 or something similarly small as power.

Great work Jule! I love when you can feel the passion that someone puts into a product. It completely shows with Monique.

I see you own a 777 as well... I'd love to hear your take between the two. I played one for a year or two before getting a rack-Mo, and recently have spent a few weeks on the 777 as my Mo went back to Jule. They're very very different sounding units.

I had an interesting gig this week with the Kern where I had more people than usual comment to me about my tone specifically. I always think of it as being very pretty in a big smooth way (I hate the term 'creamy' but it fits). But its soft and it feels like you don't get much punch out of the front end of the note. While the Monique to me is much more fun to play...punchier and 'springy' with the note envelope. I'd say that it's less 'pretty' sounding (not intended as an insult). I feel like Jule's pre handles diads & triads better and more harmonically. Although my wife who was back at the far end of the bar/room in a long long room with lots of people...commented that I was just as loud as usual but had more 'clarity'...which I found interesting.

So happy, and a big sigh of relief to have this back from Santa Cruz...and not full of vintage glass shards.

Even more awesome is the fact that while Jule is super busy, he managed to work it over VERY quickly. Green-eyed Monique only missed one gig in the time it took. Really looking forward to rehearsal tomorrow night and Thursday's gig...then we're off to the races with a busy April/May schedule.

Joel Monique works great with a F500 also with a WW Ultra but if you decide on seperate power amp choose the M700 over Minnie!
I would buy a M700 over a Minnie if I was to buy today but the Minnie is a great piece of gear and performed flawlessly in the 2 years or so I have had it. I toyed with selling my Minnie when Jule was offering me intro pricing on the F500 M700 but I couldn't make the numbers work. Plus I still really LOVE the tone of the Minnie/Monique combination and prefer the Minnie form factor.

Almost 3 years with my Dove Cage though... It ain't going anywhere!

I was considering a used Minnie because of the form factor and price delta as well. It is a very nice package. That stated, I ended springing for the M700 because I knew Jule would integrate the power amp to optimize the performance of the dove cage. I couldn't be happier with the choice. The larger form factor of the M700 acting as a complete heat sink makes cooling concerns go away. I did a four hour gig this past weekend and the M700 was barely warm. The dimples in the top of the amp holding my beloved dove cage allows me to tip my Baer ML112 cab up for better monitoring. I've got oodles of power, no heat concerns, and for me personally, the coolest looking and best sounding rig I've ever played through. I can really articulate what I'm feeling and playing, and I got tons of compliments on tonal clarity and 3D depth.

I'm in agreement...This rig ain't going nowhere!!

Hey Joel,

You will see you will be varying that sensitivity control with different basses as well. With my Fodera I started using it at 10 like you but as I played with it more and more it now varies between 10-12.

With my passive nordy vpj I find I run it abut higher between 12 and 2.

The eq I primarily run flat unless I need to compensate for room eq adjustments, then I'll tweak it a bit. I have found little eq adjustments go a long way. It's really deceiving at first but I find them pretty sensitive.

As for the power amp, there is definitely a difference. I have used mo with the following power sections:

Crest proline
Puma 900
Gk mb800
Minnie
M700

My fav out of the bunch is the m700 and then probably the crest. They both seem to be the most transparent out of the bunch and really slam with authority.

The Minnie is no slouch and hits hard but I do find it colors the tone a bit, but in a good way. Seems a bit more "warm" sounding which is nice.

The puma 900 made mo a little dark sounding to my ears but I still enjoyed this combination. I just found I needed to use the eq a bit more.

Yeah I'm probably splitting hairs here for the most part, and all of these combinations sound really good, but I do feel that the crest and the m700 definitely stand out. And I do prefer the m700 over the crest as well. My two cents.

I'm using for practice:
Passive bass->monique->xlr output->tube woo audio headphones preamp (wa7)->ultrasone edition8 headphones
This sounds AWESOME! But the volume is pretty low, I've to put the output levels on monique/wa7 to max to get any decent volume, this makes that setup a bit noisy :( any ideas how to make it louder? Add boost before monique or something? I'm nooby about impendance and all that stuff :( what to do? Thanks
P.S. Also my xlr output level doesn't have the push/pull boost somehow :(

Try using the line out instead of the XLR. It will have way more output
