Jule Amps Monique Part III

I,ve never had any problems with my WW over heating in the last 10 years iI have owned it but that was using it by itself but when I decided to use with Monique on top and reading the owners manual Walter sent with it when I bought from him new it states on #5 of his General Informantion print out.
VENTILATION Do not set anything on the top of the amplifier which covers the vent slots or impedes air flow from this space.Since there is no thermal breaker to turn the amp off if grossly overheated it also says about keel out of direct sunlight.This is why I called Walter and told him what my plan was and this is what he told me about clearance.All amps are different and have different cooling methods but this one is dependent on some particular procedures according to Walter.Im sure many have probably had stuff on top with no problems but I have decided to go the cautious route!

I'm just finding my way here with the EQ. I think the Bax is throwing me a bit because I'm not used to it.

It did that to me for a bit too, no worries... you'll get the hang of it. :cool:

I did pull the IPR 3000 out of my rack, and put the Carvin BX1500 back in. The 9-band on that thing is post-loop, so I have it there if I want it for any reason. As of now, all I use it for is a little bump at 125K. :bassist:

In two different bands, starting points for different basses this last weekend...

Hamer Standard (explorer-type, strung heavy, kinda dark)
Sensitivity = 2-3 o'clock (in)
Low = 11 o'clock
Mid = 10 o'clock
High = 2 o'clock

Spector NS2000 w/EMG P4/CS
Sensitivity = dimed (in)
Low = noon
Mid = noon
High = noon

Was lovin' on both.

Dear Jule, Monique was repaired and I am again a very happy man.
I settled NOS tubes Cryo into Monique:
_ RCA 6SL7GT-229 (dating the 40s).
_ RCA JRC 6189 / 12AU7WA (dating 1962).
_ National EZ81 / 6CA4 Japan (Mullard clones)

The excellent tone is even more three-dimensional. It's a pure happiness !!! :hyper:

Last night, with my rock cover band, we played with a choir of 150 wonderful childrens ( very cool first experience for us ). On stage, I had Monique and Minnie connected in my Barefaced ' 69er cab: the tone was fantastic. I had settled the gain at 3 O'clock and the potentiometers of the equalizer at 12 O'clock. The sound engineer did not make the slightest change of settle on his console because the tone was just perfect like that. He been very happy to amplify Monique too.:bassist:

Wow. a choir of 150 children? I am sure it was a moving experience.

I am very glad Monique contributed.

Feels good.

May I repeat?

Ever since owning Monique sound folk smile while setting my level during soundcheck. ;)

It was an original design requirement to give players 1. more control of their sound, and 2. good things for sound folk to work with. Good to know it worked.:cool:

I'm in the same state of mind with the dove cage/minnie setup. Pretty much every gig someone comes up and comments/asks about Monique. I don't mind the two extra cables.

Are you running a second Baer cab pointed towards the drummer?

Yes, and he was very happy. On that gig he was stuck in sound hell, very boomy, and monitors were poor.

I was concerned that my sound would end up with phase issues, but was willing to help my bro out anyway.

Luckily I didn't notice anything bad, sound just felt a little spread out more than usual. And I was pushing the cabs hard.

I noticed you did the 90 degree turn in the past also.. Work well for you?

I do not entirely understand the cooling requirements of all these Class D Amplifiers. I'd also follow what the designers suggest. It does seem that the cooling requirements are device specific.

So that I know how it happens, I have tried to overheat the Minnie. James says it can happen. Unfortunately I have not been able to do so in my shop. This is in part because unlike tube amps, Class D amps make no heat if they aren't making sound. The 800-D Minnie is said to have some sophisticated over-temperature sensing circuitry that shuts itself down when/if it does get too hot. (I suspect the WW does too.) Probably means I just need to play louder longer. :)

FWIW, one of the things we have discovered through our testing of many class-D heads/amps is that thermal management is one of the big factors as far as getting the best performance out of a given class-D module. The quality of power supply, proper filtering, and how to handle limiting are some of the other big issues when it comes to tweaking out a class-D amp for best performance.

Fortunately, you have one of the best minds in the business working with you on this one. :cool:

I finally brought out my new to me 1987 Pedulla Buzz fretless 4 string to a full volume rehearsal.

Man, Monique likes fretless! I was more than pleasantly shocked when my bandmates thought the Buzz sounded almost as good as my Fodera. I have yet to plug a bass into Monique that doesn't sound good, but this pre really makes a fretless sing.

The Crown XLS 1000 arrived yesterday. I have had very little time to play around but, I think I'm on to something.

1 - Dead quiet (unless you play a note). Had the whole rig on and I forgot about it even though I was in front of my cab. I'm so used to guitar and bass rigs hissing, that I've never experienced this before.

2 - Monique's EQ works much better with this super-clean power amp, particularly compared to running it into my Jag power section. Results are more noticeable, and effective. It still always sounds Monique-y.

3 - The HPF setting with adjustable cut-off is a new treat for me. I've never been able to get myself to pony up the dough for a HPF despite the claims of how awesome they are. They just aren't sexy. Having it in the amp is amazing, though. I've missed out for years.

4 - Volume. I was thinking it was silly quiet for 700w bridged into 8ohms. Thought it was possibly a dud. Then I noticed my bass volume knob was rolled half way off. User error :(

Can't wait to get my 15/6 back and crank up the volume. I'm much more excited about Monique now. I knew the magic was there, I just needed to get up to speed. I need to record some too.

I noticed you did the 90 degree turn in the past also.. Work well for you?

I did it on the last Steely Dan tribute thing and it worked like a charm. We had lousy monitoring and a wicked room (all glass windows behind us running 50' each direction). My drummer can use some "direction" and likes/needs to hear me clearly. I went the other direction with the bottom cab pointed out and the top cab pointed towards him (since he was on a riser). We play the same room in 2 weeks, I'll run the same setup though I might try pointing the low cab towards him and top cab out and see how that works. These are Baer ML112s so luckily they are great for self-monitoring.
