I agree. I did the same thing. I have a bass clef that is sort of tweaked to represent the way I see it. I'll attach a pic later.

Don't take your "ink" too seriously now. In my experience, I have seen, that *most* of those that sport "ink" have a deeper issue...kind of like trying to decorate a ratty looking christmas tree).
But hey, if this isn't you, or any one else here, there should be no need to get all nuts about it. Just my opinion, and that is all I have to say on the subject.

my god! you have absolutely no clue about any of this... i hope that you don't have much more to say. i think that people who are so adamantly outspoken against tattoos have something buried in the subconcious.
and don't take them seriously? they are a PERMANENT part of me, i think i should take them rather seriously. if your mom won't let you get one, too bad. don't take it out on us. i know that it makes you feel better about yourself but it makes you look so silly...
and yes it is a culture. walk into a tattoo parlor and see how it is. just don't tell mommy where you are going...

Somehow the imagery of an old timer at 65 bragging that he is "up to" 25 tattoos to his grand kids seems amusing to me.
Getting a Tattoo is considered conformist to you?? better look again.. Far more people do not have a tattoo than people who do.. Granted the numbers are increasing... but that does not mean people are conforming.
My tattoo holds alot of meaning to me.. I don't show it off for the world to see.
i think if the tattoo looks nice, hey go for it. i want one, however, scared to death of the pain. also, i want a certain indian tattoo and have not found the one i want yet. there are many parents today very tolerant with piercings and tattoos. i really would have to really sit and talk to my boys and then take time to think it over about them getting a tattoo. it would really depend totally on the type. and if i really want them to have one so young. who knows. it depends. cross that path if it comes. piercings, well, no. they will wait until they are 18. they do have their one ear pierced however. that is fine. but the tongue and all that.
too anyone who is worried about the pain....don't be,it's really not that bad. I have two tattoos on my head and it really did'nt hurt as much as I thought it would...I figured I would go for(what I thought would be) the most painful part of my body right from the start....much to my suprise,it did'nt hurt, but it sure was loud....sounded like a jackhammer. anyway I have an F clef on the right side and a tribal(of my own and the artists design) on the left. although my guit. player says that his rib cage and sternum(sp? the middle of your chest) area was quite painful.....PAIN IS TEMPORARY. it goes away,I promise . as soon as I figure out how to use the digital camera function on the ol' camcorder I'll post some pics

Well, I've got 4 tattoos so far. All of them were doen because I liked the look of them, and wanted them - as simple as that. There is no meaning behined them, I just thought they looked nice!
So far I have a Celtic Armband on my right upper arm, a Celtic Knot on my right deltoid, a tribal armband on my left upper arm, and an oriental dragon on my left deltoid.
Yes, I know that these are maybe a bit cheesy - but hey, it was my call. I don't know what tribe the tribal one comes from - I don't care, I liked the look of it!
Anyway, once I get my cash flow problems sorted a bit better, I plan on getting more. Not sure what yet, as it takes me a while to decide what I want, I need to be sure that in 30 years time I won't regret it! OH, I was 28 when I got my first one done - that took about 8 years of consideration!
And for the pain, it isn't that bad. It's stings a bit at the time - only really when the outlinme is being drawn. When the colouring is being done, it isn't sore at all. Once done it is like bad sunburn, but it subsides within a day or two!
The sorest bit for me was in the inside of my upper arm - but in real terms, I've had sorer splinters!

People sometimes say mine looks like a comma followed by a colon. Oh well, I was a Comp Lit major, so that's fine with me. (I know, my grammar sucks for a Comp Lit major, I'm sorry!)
I was 27 when i got my first, and took about 8 years for me to actually get one. The Stones tongue on my leg was gonna be my first, but ended up being my 4th.
And about the pain, in general, if one is worried about how much it hurts, one shouldn't be worried about getting one. Know what I mean?
So true. While I have no issues with tattoos, and I think they can be meaningful forms of expression, 99% of tattoos I see are absolutely meaningless. Most are not even an issue of "I liked the design." It's an issue of trying to look cool because they just saw a video on EmptyV were some Limp Biscuit schmuck is all tatted up.
As Fetch Da Bass can atest, it is an Epidemic here in San Diego. Every wanna-be cholo or wanna-be hardcore has got a tattoo. If you pay close enough attention most of those tattoos are all nearly exactly the same.
I would say in general it is safe to assume:

Getting a tattoo as a way to express yourself as who you are = GOOD
Getting a tattoo to fit in or fulfill some sort of preconcieved notion of hardcore = BAD
Fire = Bad
Nope, never really safe to make assumptions. You still don't know anything about a specific person/group, yet suddenly feel able to hold forth on their motivations? Best to avoid it. You show bias by calling the tattoos an "epidemic". What is a "cholo" anyway?
I didnt call tatoos and epidemic, I was speaking of the proliferation of pointless tattoos in my neck of the woods. I agree with what your saying BlissHead, but you have to trust me on this one. I live in one of the most populated beach communities in California. If you dont have a tattoo and your hanging out in Mission Beach, you are definently not the norm. Your right though, its never safe to make an assumption.... Is it OK if I change it to a generalization?
A cholo is a spanglish slang word for a gangster. It was originally a label for Chicano gang members, but it has become a label for a whole sub-culture.
Big Ted ..your so right. Mission Beach has got to be the world headquarters for super lame people with even lamer tattoo's. I think these dudes/chicks are all from the midwest ..so they get a tattoo to feel like they belong. ???...I use to live in Point Loma, I mostly hung out at OB or the cliffs, it was much more entertaining there. One Christmas day I went down to check the surf out at the pier and these two nasty looking dudes got into a big fist fight in the parking lot. I think they were fighting over the one dudes tattoo. I am so glad I now live in North County. It's a little more civilized up here...
