carl thompson uses Holly and dyes it because of its absecnce of visible grain and pure white color.
he only uses holly for veneers!
you could dye it any color.

Btw have you got any sort of finish date/month/year from Martin.

No finish date at this point. To tell the truth, I don't know if parts of the bass are built already, or whether they were waiting for the veneer before starting.

I know that they're very busy at the moment as the shop was undergoing some extension work, so I'll wait and see what develops. I have total faith in Martin and I know he won't keep me waiting any longer than necessary !!

Afraid there was still nothing to see on your project yet - Sorry. Alex mentioned the problems with the veneer but I think/hope things are going to start moving for you now.

Don't forget I had no real news at all for around 4-5 months - nothing at all really.

Then - BAM - there it is and it all starts moving fast. Things seemed to get progressively faster for me after that slow start.

I would echo what Paddy has said about the build time as I have gone through it twice now.

The longest wait is getting everything together which is also the most frustrating bit as you cannot see any visible progress. But then as Paddy says Bamm the bass takes shape before you eyes really quickly.

I waited 10 months for my fretless and about 8 for my fretted but it is worthwhile!

Spoke to Martin today and progress is good !!

The facings on the back are complete and he hoped to get the front facings finished today. The birds eye 'board is all cut as well.

Martin estimates that the woodwork will all be completed in the next 3-4 weeks and the bass should go to the finishers' before Christmas. He asked me to give him a call in fortnight to arrange a visit to check the neck shape.

Hopefully, I'll get some photos fairly soon. I'm very excited at the prospect of seeing what he's created. Thank goodness for cheap air travel !!

Thanks. Knowing that I'm actually going to see the bass in a few weeks time has upped the excitement level a bit !!

By the way, I used to travel from London to Glasgow on National Express and I still bear the mental scars !! If I can get a seat I prefer the train but the planes are so damn cheap...

I mentioned last week that I telephoned Martin and he gave me an update on the bass and timescales.

Well now I have a bit of time (and a cup of tea and a Wild and Whippy bar) I can tell you !!

A little more info to add...

I'd been looking at some of the gallery pics at http://www.seibass.com and needed to check a couple of the specs for my bass.

On some Sei's at the bottom of the neck there is sometimes a little curved area which is not covered by the facings which I didn't want. Also, I wanted to check that I wasn't going to get any dots on the face of the 'board, just my signature at the 12th fret and side dots with LED's.

I put out an e-mail which Alex answered today telling me not to worry as this was specified on my order form. The facings will be full both front and back, so the neck laminates won't be seen on the body, which is what I wanted. The 'board will only have my signature with just side LED's.

OK, I might have been being a bit paranoid about these details, but I want it to be right and I'd rather ask now than when it's too late !! Thanks to Alex for answering what he might think was a dumb question....

you got me thinking about my knobs now (oh dear, how did that sound!!! )

Not trying to worry you but are you sure yourself and Alex weren't talking at cross dolphins?

My Sei has a full facing front as seen on my pics BUT it does have that curved bit where the fretboard meets the body. Alex may be talking about the neck laminates going all the way down to base of the body but still think that the curved area is acceptable as per my Sei.

If I read your post right you don't won't that curved area that is on mine you want the facing wood all the way to the frets?

Not trying to confuse or worry. It's as you say, get it right now and avoid mistakes.

I described the area in the mail to Alex and I'd specified it before, so all is well. He said "fear not" !!

I was looking at basses on the Sei website and I thought I'd double-check this again. So I phoned up. John, as it turned out, couldn't understand what I was on about (it is a bit tricky to get over the phone). So I sent an e-mail with this picture to explain.

It turn out that the 'curved area' I'm talking about is the end of the fingerboard which goes flat to the body and it's part of the design. To change it would be a complete re-think of the design and construction of the bass. It's not a problem though and everything is pushing ahead.

This just means that my bass will look a lot like this...

Yeah, that extension of the fingerboard is something I was never sure about. it did look a bit odd.
Now I'm used to it I think it adds to the character of Martins instruments.

I bet you're getting really impatient aren't you.

I'm also thinking of going for a maple fretboard on the bass that I have on order, I originally opted for ebony.

My fretless 7 is in the shop at the moment having a change of pickups so you could ask Martin to have a look if you wish. Obviously without any pickups but the piezo's will be in place.
