Knockout "Game"

Why are so many people interested in this story being portrayed as a myth? I just don't get it. Sure, the "news" coverage may be a bit out of hand. But it was for Miley Cyrus and Duke lacrosse too. And nobody tried to get those stories cast aside as a "myth".

There are tons of videos showing these idiots punching random people. Sure, there aren't 4.7 million of them doing it. But even a dozen is offensive. It really happened. I haven't followed it but it may STILL be happening. So why cast it aside as no big deal? Why the interest in seeing this story called a myth or urban legend?

In the majority of cases, it's racially motivated assault...and needs to be dealt with as such. I don't care what ethnicity you are. You do this you need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. And sugar coating it and calling it a "game" is just wrong (some media outlets have said it's just a game some kids are playing)... There have been reported deaths (one in NJ that I know of)...anyone that says this is a myth is purposely ignoring facts...

I certainly didn't say it's a myth and I don't think anyone else did. I'm just saying that crap like this and much worse has been - and still is - going on all the time and the media has recently focused on this particular thing for now. Sure, it must be stopped, but if you're going to be outraged, why just focus on one thing? We have wars going on, but "the knockout game" is the central violence issue to get upset about? What about all violence?

Don't get me wrong. This behavior is deplorable and anyone caught deserves severe punishment. I just don't subscribe to the "outrage of the month" club, if you know what I mean. The way the media spins it, this is a behavioral forest fire.

I'm never a fan of seeing violence. But I think it's a fairly safe assumption that this guy's days of unprovoked assault are over.

Well...hopefully

Well, he was an idiot to start with and we just watched him get kicked in the head so I'm not sure he'll be any smarter going forward . . .

In any event, it's cowardly enough to sucker punch anyone, but the elderly?

A man arrested for supposedly engaging in the knockout game was apparently targeting women in jewish Brooklyn, one of them 72 and another 78.

And while most of the news stories have focused on black on white crime, the first federally charged (that I know of) suspect in a knockout game is a 27 year old white man who hit a 79 year old black man, breaking his jaw and knocking out teeth.

Who decided this was a good idea??? What is wrong with the world?

We do live in the least violent period in human history, believe it or not. :spit:

The "knockout Game" thing is a moral panic stirred up by the old media, per usual. A bunch of unrelated violent crimes, that happened to be videoed on various phones (welcome to 2005, people) does not lead to some sort of collective movement. These incidents should never be considered as some sort of 'movement' either by the toilet press (who make lots of money off your widespread panicking) or by the Police. There are tons of videos of kids doing stupid stuff on Youtube, but none of it is the product of some sort of teenage hive-mind.

This 'game' does appear to be a great excuse for a Internet tough guys to talk about shooting black teenagers with their concealed carries though. I've seen enough of that in the last couple of weeks. There is an unhealthy racial undercurrent in all of this that I dare say certain areas of the media are in no great hurry to correct (knowing that a good portion of their viewer base is ignorant elderly white people). This sort of news really suits those who are only happy when they are reminding everybody, and most importantly themselves, that the world, and society at large, is getting worse by the day. If the stats say otherwise it is because the stats lie, whilst the usual right-wing toilet journalism is to be believed to the tee. Talk about a captive audience. :ninja:

I was thinking much more "cowardly" than "unwise" for these kinds of folk. Possibly the thought of "Hey! Last time I got my butt whooped! I didn't know you could get your butt whooped doing this!" may have some effect...

Oh I know. I was just making a joke.

The idea of "the Knockout Game" is an interesting phenomenon to me.

I certainly don't see it as a myth in the sense that it doesn't happen but I do wonder exactly how prevalent it is.

I remember an idiot that I played on the basketball team with my sophomore year (he was a senior) getting arrested the next year with his friends for driving around looking for homeless people and assaulting them with tasers. That's pretty disgusting. And I'll bet there were other low lifes somewhere else in the country doing the same thing. A part of me wonders if instead of 1994 they'd done the same thing in 2014 if the news would have picked up on it as a story.

Even if they had, it wouldn't have gotten the traction that the knockout game does because I'd wager that the vast majority of cable news viewers aren't homeless. Because selling fear is a huge boon to ratings, especially if it is something scary that is out of your personal control.

At the same time, I also wonder how much the news and especially social media (YouTube in particular) encourages similar behavior.

On the whole, our society is safer and more peaceful than in pretty much any other time in human history. But we also live in an age where violence and depraved acts are communicated to the greatest degree in human history.

I've seen several of these racially motivated stories along with all the senseless shootings, and keep wondering what is wrong with todays youth. My guess is it partially has to do with the rise in secularism, the media, and the entertainment industry. Am I wrong?

Yes.

Violent actions are not limited to today's youth, god fearing folks also commit crimes and the entertainment industry has always had barbaric components. Every generation thinks the generation after it is going to be the downfall of the planet.

As for the media, all that's different today is that you hear stories from around the world in an instant, that doesn't mean it's happening on your doorstep. Just a couple decades ago news didn't travel that far or fast. Compare the coverage of 9/11 and Chernobyl, for instance.

Almost certainly.

If only these violent black teenagers could find a place in their hearts for Jesus! Give me a break.

The bigger issue here is the reporting of violent crime in the news, and not that the lack of wall-to-wall God chat in your media and entertainment. Violent crime has always been around, but fifty years ago the news was reporting real news, not trying to keep god-fearing middle class white christian twitching by making spurious assumptions and correlations.

Wow, crazy stuff. Wasn't there some guy who made a series of videos called Bum Fights that featured homeless people engaging in seriously amateur boxing for the promise of a sandwich? You gotta wonder who these lowlifes that think of this stuff are.
