Knockout "Game"

I doubt it started off as a myth as much as somebody connecting unrelated incidents to create a tangible news story. We know that people do violent stuff, and we know that smartphone ownership is increasing over time. Therefore more of the violent stuff is going to happen on camera. All you need is a lazy journalist to create some hysterical headlines.

No doubt this will create some copycat cases. Eventually some gated community wannabe Rambo (a few of which seem to exist in this thread already) will kill an unarmed teenager and we will be hearing about the 'tragic consequences of the Knockout Game' ad nauseum. This will cement the curtain twitcher's beliefs that (mostly black) teens are playing a collective game of 'beat whitey', and all because they believe the spin the media put on fairly mundane and unrelated stories.

Already I've seen posters on British forums asking the (rhetorical) question of "when will this happen here?" Not bad for a country whereby a faction of the population treat the Great Train Robbers as folk heroes. I don't think we need to worry about importing violent crime; we are pretty good at it here.

It's not really all that different to the "Happy Slapping" we saw over here ~10 years back.

Wait... wouldn't that exactly make it a myth? The game doesn't exist, a journalist pieces together disparate and unrelated acts of violence captured on video and then invents the relationship and its label, propagating this invention until it becomes part of public consciousness.

Depends how you define "media". If the mainstream types never reported on it, I don't think it would make a bit of difference. Word would still spread through Facebook, blogs, etc.

Id consider both to be "media". Apparently this knockout game stuff has been reported on mainstream "news" sources. I havent seen anything about it on Facebook.
In fact, if it werent for it being mentioned in various threads here on TB, Id have never heard of it.

The reality is if one act of violence occurred it's not a myth. It's real.

It should be condemned by all right thinking peoples.

You think Al Capone. I think kid who wants to punch an old lady in the face on the street. Two different kinds of criminals.

Bonnie and Clyde does not equal Wayne, the 15-year old from Queens who is bored on a Saturday with his friends.

The extent of their want for notoriety comes from posting the video on Youtube to laugh about with their friends.

Since everyone is talking experientially about this and most of you seem to be of an older news-watching breed, I assure you...most of the kids doing this wouldn't know a news channel if a reporter from one came up and played the knock-out game with them.

Some of you are really out of touch with how substantial social media is in the lives of adolescents and college-kids - and how "mainstream" media is not. I could pick out 20 of my friends and nearly all would likely admit that they hadn't watched 10 minutes of a cable news program. Hell, some don't even have TV.
