Kubicki club, part 2

That is awesome! I've never seen that colour on an Ex-Factor! Maybe that's when Fender produced the Jazz bass in that colour. (early 90's) I owned both Kubicki-Kubicki's and FCS Kubicki's and prefer the 9v over the 18v. Great score! I'm glad you saw and bought it because it would have got me going if I saw it! :thumbsup:

My 8/90 is 9 volt. This one is a 9/90. A fellow TB brother contacted me about it since we're only a couple of hours apart and he didn't want to ship ( I totally get that). The 18v pre was installed by a previous owner. It's a clean install but the selector has 12 positions. The last 6 are all mute. I'm thinking there is a stop that has become dislodged or something like that. I'll work it out one way or another. I'm just glad i didn't have to sell off my NS-4 to get this. It was a fair price, about the going rate ...not spectacular, but fair.

It's actually a little more blue in person, but really nice just the same. I did a little research.....those 12 position selector switches can have a stop ring which is set according to how many positions that you need. I'll dig into that tonight.

OK, I think I'm done now. Leave me with these, my 2 Spectors(for the kids) and a precision(well, you know) and come get the rest. I won't be needing them.

The reason I prefer the 18V over the 9V is just having the option. I must admit I very rarely use the passive settings on the Kubicki's. That being said. There's two active settings on the 18V system. The first is virtually identical to the 9V and the second is where you get all the umph and headroom. That's the setting I use the majority of the time.
When I do use my 9V Kubicki and I need / want the extra umph, I just run my BBE and vualla!! Instant 18V like emulation.

I just received and installed the selector switch stop ring that Carla sent out to me. Glad to know there's a few companies out there that really surpass the status quo in terms of customer service. Carla and Mike are amazing.
Now, whether I'll like the 18 volt setup over my 9 volt one....I'll find out tonight at rehearsal. I have no problem with the 9 volt at all.....

So what's the verdict?
I've currently decided not to turn over my 9V. It plays amazing and has great feel. I just need to run and or transport my BBE if I intend on using it.

My three consist of:
Early FCS 18V
FCS 9V
Post FCS 18V

On day I'll write up a review on the differences. All I need is a pre FCS to complete the different eras.

You can buy the 18v amp and convert it.

No doubt.
I'm convinced the 9's good. Plenty loud. Originally I wanted to convert my 9 but I actually like the simplicity of the controls and EQ. It cuts through the mix no matter what.
I imagine there's plenty of components that can compensate for that "fat" sound the 18 gives you but the BBE emulates it perfectly for me. The 18's finicky in Active position 2. It's the tone I want but it's harder to dial in.I think I've seen a BBE petal. Might look into that cause mines a rack mount in a portable case. I'm always trying to minimize my necessities.

Each Factor is different in my experience. No need to change things for me. They're all unique..

I am quite at home with the 9v system. The 18v doesn't sound bad......the 9v sounds great. Had a gig last night and was planning on using the 18v bass. The heat kicked in this week and I had to put the 18v bass in rehab for a few days until I get the relief and action squared away. The 9v bass only needed a 1/8 turn backed off to be ready. Frankly, if the 18v bass were 9v it wouldn't bother me a bit, but maybe I'm still adjusting to it.

As I stated earlier - having owned both I prefer the 9v system. It has a dial-able mid sweep on the board which the 18v lacks and I primarily use the 1st click and never passive. I just had a rehearsal w/my 9v Kubicki/Fender powered Fenderbird and absolutely love the unique Factor tone & meaty-ness that pre delivers. :bassist:

The Ex is 'ruining me'!

As a dedicated 5 string player, I've actually had to 'fix' my poor style of avoiding open strings.

Then again, it's making me a much better player as I've had to improve my muting technique at the same time!

Since I got mine, I'd say it gets like 50-60% of my bass time now. Addictive little devil!

Hey all great to see some recent activity here again - and some really nice Kubickis have joined our family it looks like :)

Need some advice - my beloved maple quilt top Factor has developed a pretty gnarly grounding issue. The noise coming off it when I take my hands off the metal parts is really loud. I know the basics of tackling grounding issues (ie add shielding) but am a little hesitant to start mucking around in the control cavity just yet and wanted to see if any of y'all have dealt with this yet. Any input appreciated!

I'm sorry I can't help you there as I'm clueless around DC stuff (even if I can wire your house).

But if you factor is yellow I'd be happy to buy the problem off you!

Nice, another old Sadowksy fan. :)

This is indeed an Anderson-era bass, which I always thought made it doubly-cool since Anderson made great guitars but almost no basses.

It was my first Sadowsky that I bought new and it's still here almost 30 years later. If I didn't have another custom Sadowsky here, I'd never even consider this trade idea. But there's something special about a Kubicki too...

Yes to me that era of sadowskys were the good ones. Im not not sure if he is using wildwood parts now or usaguitar parts now. They are still good. But that Anderson era are special..
I had an Original Kunicki X Factor form the mid 80s.. it was a great bass. Nothing like a fender style bass at all..
I wish i still had it.. Teh Kubicki was quite possibly the most comfy bass that i played ..
