I didn't realize Nordstrand's PU's fit the MK-1's for 4-strings.. man you have me thinking bad thoughts. Anyway, here is my 01 -
I replaced the pickups and preamp in my 55-01 recently. I used Bartolini US-made MK pickups and their NTMB preamp. I also added a DPDT switch for each pickup to run them in parallel/single-coil/series mode. The switches stay in the control cavity for now. I'm debating whether to drill holes through to the front for them. While I was doing all of this work, I did a "belt and suspenders" shielding job too. I apologize for the cellphone pictures. I still need to take some "real" pictures. I also need a good "completed" shot.

Yeah they fit, but there is small gap left. About an 1/8" all around, but not so much that is looks strange.
The sound makes up for it though...

What do you think of the MK5's compared to the MK1's?
It's tough for me to say what piece changed the sound the most, since I replaced the pickups and the preamp at the same time. All I can say for sure is that the bass sounds very different than it did before.
As for the preamp, I find the EQ to be much more useful on the NTMB than it was with the MK-1. I can dime/zero each band and end up with something that sounds like it could be useful, whereas anything more than a slight bump/drop on the MK-1 sounded bad. The high EQ on the MK-1 was especially dreadful, while the bass EQ was almost as bad.
As for the pickups, eyeballing the MK side-by-side with the MK-1s is revealing. The MK-1s were made of plastic, while the MK pickups seem to be made of ceramic. The MK-1s had a signal and ground wire coming out of the back, while the MK pickups had four wires and a shield wire. There was no way to tell exactly how the MK-1s were wired internally (though my multimeter gave me a really good idea) while the MK wiring allowed me to use the DPDT switch to change their operation. As for the sound of the pickups, I always thought my G string sounded weird with the MK-1s. It had a tinnier sound compared with the other stings. I blamed the string itself. After changing to the MK pickups, I don't notice that anymore and I'm still using the same set of strings.
All in all, if I had to do it again I'd do it exactly the same way.

I think the MK5's are so strong they could stand alone and still kick ass.
I was impressed when I held them in my hand how solidly constructed they were.
They are built like tanks, perfect for a bass bullet-proof...
I had never payed much attention to Lakland primarily because I was happy with what I had. Well I was in the Phoenix area about two months ago for some meetings and I had some time on my hand and cruised over to The Bass Place. Okay truth be know I always make time to stop in there. They are very cool guys by the way. Anyway I have been without a 5 for just about a year because I had to sell mine last year to deal with some unforeseen life curveballs. My inner player was telling me that I needed to get back in the 5'er game but I was pretty sure that I was not going to buy another SR5H. I was talking to the Bass Place guys and they suggested a Lakland at which point he hands me a 55-01. I played it and was blow away first of all that I could play it because I have picked up a few 5's before and had feel like the first time I had ever put my fingers on a bass. Secondly it sounded amazing. Next question of course was how much. I looked at the tag which was $779 and immediately asked if there was a 1 missing in front of the 7 because I thought there was no way a fine instrument like that one could be below the $1k mark.
Anyway I went home and had full on GAS for about a week and decided to part with one of my 4 strings to fund the Lakland. I am not looking back folks. This bass has helped me grow as a player and it sounds amazing. For reference I also played a 55-02 and liked the 01 more. Flame top is great but not needed for me. I think it is a work of art just the way it is. I will post some pictures as soon as I take one or two.
Anybody reading this that is considering a 55-01...this bass is probably the best value out there for a 5 string. I am very keen to try more Laklands.

I just got this tonight
This is actually my 4th 55-01 . I replaced the Bart MK-1s with EMGs . A 40P5 in the neck and a 40CS in the bridge . I have not had a chance to fire it up yet ,except in the store to make sure iy works . I will post a review after practice on Wednesday .

Jesse - ain't a "healthy" addiction a wonderful thing????
I am keeping an eye open for a nice JO4 or JO5 with RW neck ('burst preferred) but natural may do as well!

Hey Doug,
Just how "healthy" is what I'm not sure about at times.
I've been having GASeous thoughts that involves a certain JO5 and either a DJ5 or a 55-01. We're still trying to sell our house in FLA, so I can't increase the numbers.
