You guys are absolutely killing me!!

Well it's not intentional! :D

Totally drooling over these, especiallly your SuperT. Just gorgeouse and bet it's awesome.

I lucked out getting that one.
It was the last 5501 in the store. I guess no one wanted natural.
That was my first "real bass".
When I got that bass I decided to get serious about playing.

Every Lakland I have is phenominal.
Each one is special in it's own right.

The best neck I've ever played is on my 5502 and it's really light.

My JO5 sits in the pocket sooo well.

And the 5501 is simply a tool.
If I need to bust a hole in a wall I bring the 5501.
It's also the flyer, it so stable plane rides don't affect it.

I'm seriously considering keeping an eye out for a nat/maple and doing Nordy Big Splits w/a 3-band Audere with passive tone.

Dat's what's hot baby! (as Randy Jackson would say).

Doing pretty good by accident. :)

I'm always on the look out for a natural.

Gotta agree with both these statements. My 55-02 has an awesome neck and is nice and light.
And the JO5 sits up tall right in the pocket.

My 55-02 has been the swiss army knife so far, but thinking a modded nat/maple 55-01 may be just the ticket to take away some playing time.

Dat's what's hot baby! (as Randy Jackson would say).
I'm picking up what you're putting down, bro!!

I have an opportunity to buy this 55-01 deluxe fretless for $500 w/HSC:

I've just never owned a fretless bass before. What do you think? Apparently the fretboard is rosewood - is that going to be an issue?

Hey SuperTanker, you have clips of your modded 55-01 up anywhere yet? Dying to hear some dude.:bassist:

Just for you CapN at 1:30 in the AM...

I'm in a mellow mood so here's a mellow song I'm fooling around with.

Excuse the playing, there's a few mistakes.

There are no effects on the bass,
straight to the board with a little shelf boost on the bottom and top, controls are flat on the LH3 and the blend is in the middle.

Hopefully you'll get some idea how it sounds...

Sounds good Tanker. It's definately got some low end presence in the mix. Good song too. That song's been getting ladies pregnant for decades now. As far as mistakes, there were none that really popped out. Maybe if I were picky I'd notice something but it's 3:30 a.m. so I don't care. Sounds good.

A fretless with a rosewood board is cool.
Rosewood give a very nice "Muwah", if you know what I mean.

With a 5501 Deluxe it may even have a US Bart NTMB preamp, if so that would be really good.

Of course I wouldn't mention that to the seller, he may raise the price.

I'm not a fretless player myself, but I think the bass you're looking at would be an excellent choice and the price is right...

Natural and maple sounds good to me. I also love a black and maple look too. Too bad they discontinued the inca silver. Maybe you could find one used somewhere.

Thats a great price!
You'll be impressed.

As far as maple or rosewood, I have 6 basses 5 of them have maple necks.

I like maple because it has an edge to it rosewood doesn't have.

Maple has a brighter tone and zing in the higher registers.

I think it balances out the tone of Lakland 01 basses, which generally have a thick, dark tone to them.

I also like the look.

You can find more information on neck woods here:

So do u have good tonal range on your Lakland's? Im so excited about getting mine. And what would u describe the 01's overal tone as? Anything unique?

That's an interesting question.

The stock 01's sound very much like the MK1 electronics.
If you play another bass with MK1 pre and pups (Ibanez, Cort, etc.) you'll discover they have a distinctive sound.

Generally I would describe it as thick, dark and punchy.
It sounds like a bass, if you know what I mean.

The eq is pretty versatile, so you can get the right tone for almost every genre.

Whether you need a rock grind, blues bottom, reggae dub, electronica dub, hip hop punch, motown fingerstyle, etc., the 01's can make it happen...

As for me and my Laklands, I can get literally ANY tone from them I want.

You may want to take a look at this video. It explains what I'm talking about...

*Might I suggest a rosewood fingerboard. One of the things I like most about my 44-01 or any Lakland for that matter is the way the rosewood fingerboard hangs over part of the headstock, past the nut.
*I also chose a sunburst finish to go with it. I like having the ash grain show through but since the pieces of wood used for the body often have mismatched grain patterns the sunburst helps to hide some of these imperfections.
*Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my 44-01 and wouldn't change a thing. It is one of the most comfortable and playable instruments I have ever put my hands on.
