I recently got 5502D on a trade. It looks great and I do love the neck but I am not really digging the tone. It has LH3, not Bart electronics (not that I have tried Bart elcetronics). I am looking to trade with Bart electronics and have my ad on classified. My question is then this: Do you guys prefer LH3 over Bart? Why?

I really liked the Barts on my ash/maple 4-94. They weren't dark at all. But , I don't understand how that works, with my later 55-94s, an ash/maple and alder/rosewood, they were just too dark. I changed the pickups for the LH3 , keeping the Bartolini preamp , and it was just right. The bass sounds harsh, agressive, sparkly. I play classic jazz, some funk and melodic metal
On the other hand, the guy who got my pickups, likes the Barts on his ash/maple 55-02 as they add support, tension and mass in the low mids. He plays nu-metal

I can't really comment on the earlier-later Barts but one of my 55-94s was '06 and the other was '01. The lettar had the older, not the oldest, design of the MME: same shape but the plastic finish looked different and the logo was different too.
The oldest MME were also smaller. No idea how different they sound.

I take that as a compliment - my punk rock roots are showing! I was probably thinking Paul Simonon at the time, but close enough.

And Greg - Evan and I have an ongoing 3-way with JO #26 (Tracy? Stacy? Spacey? ) so she goes back to him when he's ready.

Then? I'll be Gassing for a hollowbody with CHi's and Maple Neck Decade, but we'll see what happens. Its hard to let any of them go.

I'm digging the punk-rock Glaub very much, too. Simonon, Dee Dee Ramone, Pete Farndon from the Pretenders (not quite punk, but still...). Oh yeah, and Sid. If you ever decide to sell that one, let me know.

I would. 18,5 is fine with me. Same fretboard width?

- send a PM to Nubs. It may take time tho, he is a busy person. Sometimes I think he (or she, or they) is a myth - but then he comes up with new numbers. Or maybe ascribing a number is painful?

- the JO is a FJB '62 at its very best. I haven't had one so I can't really compare.
The 44-02's neck is different but man, is it cool! Best neck profile ever (a bit better than the 5 -string version for me ).

I have never tried a Lakland with the old Bartolini system, but I find the LH-3 to be pretty dark, IMHO. I usually run the treble boost at 90% or so to get the top-end to open up on the bass. I love the tone - it's my go-to 4-string for the studio for sure - but I have a hard time understanding what others are talking about when they say their LH-3 equipped basses are 'bright'? Thoughts?

Interesting. Quite a different story with me.
I do dial bass @12-1 o'clock, treble @4 and mid @3 o'clock on my Lakies to get the "jazzy" sound that I want, but "dark" LH3? Never. I'd say "shallow in the low mids".
I would more often go to bridge coil on the Barts but to forward coil with the LH3 to get what I want. Otherwise the Barts would be too wooly and Lakies - too thin for my sound. I feel the "J" sound is a lot brighter but less "full" with the LH3.
I also feel the Barts make a more impressive emulation of the "P" sound than the LH3.

yeah, I saw that on the decade...bummer. Anyway, I just like the look of a P body. that's all and that was kinda my point. I can get what I want with lakland sorta, but after the initial investment, you have to sink a few hundred more in to get the mods done (I would never try to route a body...lol), and teh cost of some of the mods (a bound and blocked 5 string neck) makes it not reasonable to do on a skyline. It is almost as much as the cost of the bass. I really wish Dan would make it an option on the skyline 5 string neck. I assume it would go over well as an adder. I mean, just look at the number of 55-01's, 55-02's, and JO5's that are out there. I am sure a few of those would have B and B necks...anyway, I stil llove my non-perfect lakies...

This, Denis. Fuller, and with a growl of their own that I actually like better than that of most standard J pickups.

For some reason, the Chi-sonic clips on the JO don't do justice to the pickups, to my ears. Have you listened to John/Gecko5's live youtube clip posted on the LOG? The parts where it's just drum and bass are a more accurate representation of the single-coil Chi-sonic tone, IMO.
