I swapped them back
I don't play the fretless that much, and then the Decade wouldn't get the playing time it deserves...I couldn't do that. Plus the Decade is in the book with blocks.

I'm owner of two lakland US 4, both passive ones, one with lindy fralin and the other with lakland pickups and I must say,IMHO, don't buy it with lakland pickups, they have no depth, sounds too young, they have a too little young voice.

I definitely agree that the Lindys sound fab. They're my fave JO soundclips on the Lakland site (followed closely by the new CSes). My experience has been that the Lakland pups also sound pretty good though...

I disagree. The J pickups sounded great through my rig, and the p pickup KILLS!
And you probably got those pups hand-painted some wicked hue that Lakland will be offering in the near future...
I'm not very satisfied of the J pups, not depth enough for me in the low!
And I'm not satisfied about the JO US 4 itself, I don't think I'll buy another lakland US.
When I first received it, the string retainer was missing, strap button wasn't screwed and this bass sounds like ****, no sustain, of course it's a beautiful bass but I'm more a bassplayer than a collector, and you markus?

Hm. Well, at least now I know I'm not the only one whose axe was substandard when it arrived. Sorry to hear that about a US one, though. Did you buy it brand new? That'd be worth a return.

Very strange to hear of a Lakland not having enough depth, what amp/cab(s) are you playing this through? Did you buy this used? What strings are you using?

Wow...nice jab. I've been playing bass for quite a few years, and I have the luxury of have a nice collection of basses. I happen to have a job and a family that keeps me very busy, so I can't get out there and gig like I used to. Of coarse...this renders me absolutely tone deaf. I really can't hear anything that's good. I like the sound of nails on a chalkboard.
I'm sure you are the only "bassplayer" to own a US Lakland. So I will take your word for it, and disregard any good things I hear from all these collectors. No bassplayers on talkbass. We are just one big online Antique Road Show.
You certainly have a right to your opinion, but coming into a Lakland Thread and bashing their pickups, and then following it with a jab will not win you any friends here.
Where did you get this bass? No string retainer? Sounds like you didn't buy it from a "players" store...or you got played.

Weird!! I've never heard of a US Lakland w/ QC issues that bad slipping thru...
Also never heard of someone thinking they sounded like crap. I would've sent that one back, gotten a replacement, and then if you still weren't happy, experiment w/ strings, amps, cabs, etc...
Of course, maybe you're not a jazz bass guy? I'm only truly happy w/ a jazz wired up in series, which makes it sound more like a Stingray or P bass.

... I was right!! BTW, Markus is THE man to go to w/ a tone or pickup question. I trust him as much as the guys at Lakland when it comes to steering someone in the right direction. He's got a great ear!

That's unfortunate that your JO wasn't up to snuff, I certainly hope you contacted Lakland about those issues.
I have an older JO with Fralins that I really dig, but I've played newer USJOs that were fantastic in terms of both quality and sound. The Lakland J pickups seem to have plenty of bottom end to me, whether on a JO or a DJ. Guys like Adam Clayton, Juan Alderete and Tim Commerford, just to name a few, have made pretty extensive and prominent use of them.
