I play & I collect, I've owned both - I prefer the Fralins on a J...but based on my trained, qualified and somewhat experienced ear, the Laklands are pretty close.

I have found that with Lakland, a quick call or email would remedy any or all QC issues - I can say that with absolute confidence.


As for Markus - his basses are ugly anyway :hiding:....well, except for the HB and the Decade.....and the JO's....well the 44-07 is ok too, I guess...the Glaub, well I suppose it's alright...apart from that they are all ugly-

You certainly have a right to your opinion, but coming into a Lakland Thread and bashing their pickups, and then following it with a jab will not win you any friends here.

Where did you get this bass? No string retainer? Sounds like you didn't buy it from a "players" store...or you got played.

Don't want to sound unpleasant Markus! Talkbass is THE bassplayer's forum. That's why I want to share my own experience.
I bought this lakland brand new in a wellknown store in the east coast but when I received this bass the string retainer was missing and I couldn't play the D and G strings because it sizzled a lot! And that means that nobody, both Lakland and the bass store, has played the bass to test it.
A week after this problem, the screw of the strapbutton has broken, fortunately I caught the bass before broking his face on the ground.
I have written to Lakland and to the bass store, but they did't want a return, it was too expensive, so they send me a string retainer and explain me how to install it. I live in belgium. I like buying and testing bass but I'm not so consensuel about Lakland.
Have a Suhr j classic and a Callowhill junk on order but I still come back and play my old 70's fender

Wow, that seems *really* unusual for a US Lakland. I'm surprised anything would leave the shop with any of those issues (though the strap pin thing could just be a faulty screw). Guessing the long overseas trip may have affected the setup somewhat, which could explain string buzz stuff (unless it was due to the lack of string retainer).

Sorry to hear you had so many issues with it. I can attest to the amazing level of customer service Lakland typically offers... they've been nothing but fantastic and responsive for me when issues have arisen... even long past their stated warranty period. Unfortunately, due to your location, you were unable to truly experience that.

That's unfortunate that your JO wasn't up to snuff, I certainly hope you contacted Lakland about those issues.

I have an older JO with Fralins that I really dig, but I've played newer USJOs that were fantastic in terms of both quality and sound. The Lakland J pickups seem to have plenty of bottom end to me, whether on a JO or a DJ. Guys like Adam Clayton, Juan Alderete and Tim Commerford, just to name a few, have made pretty extensive and prominent use of them.

Of course it would be easier to have a lakland dealer in my area, we got one but he only sells skyline.

I didn't build, or sell you the damn thing, so why target me?

I think the problem you have is with the dealer. I have never heard of these kinds of problems with a new US bass. If I buy a new car off the lot, and see a big dent in the side, do I go after the manufacturer? Nope...I go after the dealer. Then it is the dealers choice to approach the manufacturer if it is indeed something that the dealer didn't do.

Yeah, that would seem to be the logical way to approach things.

Not sure if he had to pre-order or just bought something in stock at a store, but either way, if I noticed an issue like the string retainer missing, or when picking it up at the store plugged it in and it played poorly or didn't sound right, I would have refused to take it and demanded that it be taken care of before I took it home. Then again, if our friend was as tactful about contact and service inquiries as he has been here... :eyebrow:

Hey guys, I checked my emails earlier and found out that I won the Hanson pickup giveaway!! Being a member at Laklandowners.com DEFINITELY has it's benefits!!!

I'm going to get the Neodynium split P pup (the one w/ Chisonic technology) and put it in Goblin. I've heard Markus raving about how good his sounds :), now I'll get to find out :hyper:.
