Now that I see the bass, I think both would look good, but going black wouldn't be much of an upgrade. If you want to go with chrome, I'd do it, but if you were thinking black, I'd stick with the stock ones.
I have run across some metal knobs with indicators. I agree that for that bass, indicators are a must.
Glad you're diggin' it! I've still never played an -01. Haven't run across any in these parts.
Nice! That's one place I'd like to go.
Guys.... those of you who like the -02 series. Convince me why the 02 is worth the extra $$$ over the 01. Personally I the 01 lacks in the visual department but thats just me.

No, seriously, as much as the -01 is a great bass, the Mk-1 is oh well, not so great. The lows are not that assertive, the highs are not as live and are somewhat harsh and hissy, and then there's the noise. I had a chip swapped on my bass and that I considered it to be worth the deal. But then again, I'd paid $100 to have that done
The US Вartolini MME/J installed on the older versions of the -94/-02 have LOTS of sounds; the best part is, they are usable ones, not like "you have those 3 knobs but oh, they don't really do anything", like on one of those basses with single wide pickups that resemble the -94 /-02
. This is a bass you can use in a jazz big band, for rock, for church music, for anything.The newer Lakland LH-3s are close to that, but with a more agressive/modern bite.
There are guys who are happy with their stock -01s; those that are happy with their -01s with pups and/or preamps swapped for something; I say you should give a try to a -94/-02 and find for yourself

I'd go Rosewood to match the fretboard. I like the look of wood knobs, particularly on an instrument with a nice top... It's a good complement. I have ebony knobs on my 55-02D and Birdseye maple on my 55-94.
I'm not really a fan of the stock 55 knobs (my MTD 535 has similar as well). They're easy to see (though o rarely look and go more by feel anyway), but cheapen the appearance of the instrument IMO.

I used to think that the 55-01s did NOT have carbon reinforcement rods in the necks, but I've heard that I was mistaken about that.
As far as looks go, the 01-Deluxes look nice, VERY nice! Standards can look sorta plain.
The 02's versatility is it's strongest selling point: jazz, MM, P bass, and all the in between settings.
I disagree, I associate the stock 02/94 knobs w/ finer instruments, and wood knobs w/ boutique sandwich-style basses. But, to each his own.
