I've had both - and I still love Musicmans....the 55-02 is more versatile and would be the better choice.
I would throw down for the 55-02 without hesitation.

Still loving my Laklands. Been offered a lot of different basses lately, but still favor the Laklands.
I own and use both Lakland and Musicman. have two of each for different musical styles/applications.

Completely rewiring my frankenbass today. THe internal wiring, wich I did I was not too thrilled with.
Plus I am going back to the Bartolini NS3TMB-18. The mids are a narrower range I think. So they speak just a little better with those 2 big honkin humbuckers in my bass.
Next up, once I actually place the order, is the internal version of the Roland midi pickup.
Im a wierd dude I know. Im looking at the body and thinking of a refinish. ......

Nice! You guys seem to be keeping busy. Heard "Animal" on the radio again the other day while driving. My 7-year old son exclaimed "I love this song!". Congrats on the success so far.

I finally got to play my new-to-me late 2002 BG PJ that I posted a picture of last week. I was fortunate to have two gigs last weekend. I LOVED the feel and playability of the bass, the sound (especially when I got to turn it up some during the last set of our outdoor wedding gig on Saturday), and man, is it comfortable on.
However, I really didn't like the buzz/hum when my fingers weren't touching the strings--didn't like that at all. I noticed it both indoors Friday night and outdoors on Saturday; it was especially loud on Saturday. I'm hoping that was a product of the wiring of those two venues and not this gorgeous bass...

Be proud of that 55-01! I gig stock 55 and 44-01's all the time, more than my 44-02 Deluxe. I love the tones in the bass.
Played my first gig with the 55-94 last night and it was awesome! There was a bit too much buzzing on the E string, but I got through. A small tweak this morning and it was all set. I wish I had spend an extra 5-10 minuted on the setup BEFORE the gig though.
I wish I could say that the rig fared the same way. I finally reached the limit with the Bergantino HT/EX stack, it just could not keep up with the really loud drummer and 2 guitards. I was tweaking knobs all night to bring out the mid range of the cabinets in an effort to cut though better.
Regardless, I am going to be a LOG member for some time to come!

I got a 55-01 sunburst, too a month ago. It is a fretless with an ebony fretboard.
I do like it a lot. I'm actually learning how to control mwahh pretty well. In the case of the 55-01 with a mid to low setup, it's all about relief. I actually got it to the point that it was mwahhing its brains out and "lefty-loosey'd" a quarter turn and now it's "just right" as Goldilocks would've said.
Lots of tone flexibility...comfortable neck, but then I also love my 2006 Warwick neck, so it may be that I'm flexible about neck feel.
I think most people in this thread will say go for the 55-02 (that's what I'm saying anyway, I love mine).
However, something to note is that although they have a similar p'up config they are still quite different.
The Musicman will still sound like a Musicman, so you need to decide if that's the sound you want.
IMO the 55-02 is the more versatile of the two, as it is very Musicmannish as well as a great J sound and decent P sound, on top of the 55-02/94 sound which is my favourite.
However, if you can, get to a store and try out both

nah!!! just like the rest of us.....always looking for the next "fix".....maybe we a re all wierd and crazy and we just do not know it because of everyone else around us.....we see this as "normal"...
