Man, I had the opportunity to crank my LOG bass through my Ampeg stage rig, and it is monstrous! Through an SVT-IIpro and an SWR Goliath Sr. 6x10, the bass just kills. There is a serious low mid "presence" that hits the tubes just right.

With the maple board and Nordy pickup, the bass can go from the mellowest butter smooth to full on blaspheming fury with a twist of the tone knob and an adjustment in right hand attack. I do find myself rolling the tone knob back pretty hard, so I'm thinking maybe a switch to Chromes at some point, but I do love the versatility. My first P bass, and she (Jezebelle) is a beauty!

There is something about cranking up the gain through an all tube SVT and jacking up that tone knob on a P bass that makes everything right in the world:) With my Warwick, I would get a decent overdriven tube sound, but this bass sounds like it was tailor made for tubes.

Anyone else playing loud, aggressive music with their LOG bass?

I was giggin'. And I gotta say... my latest setup is my 44-01 with JO Flats into a VT Bass -> Eden WTX500 -> SWR Goliath I. Such a mix of old and new, and the 44-01 is right at home. Stock MK-1 setup too... Such a thick, rich tone. Loving it. I also realized in looking at my 44-01's neck that this one is 5 years old as of 2011. My how time flies and how basses sound better with age.

I notice the barts on 55/44-01 are described as "Bartolini MK-1 split-coil soapbars".

Can anyone tell me what the "split-coil" part of that means ? I'm guessing there's no coil tap, otherwise there'd be a switch, so does it mean it's a humbucking pickup ? Or split in two halves (say EA/DG) under the covers ?

And what does that contribute to the sound ?

(Yeah, I know, I need to go to a shop and listen)

I like flats on a modern bass in most cases. Since I don't go for a sizzly sort of sound and I like the 'crack' flatwounds give when you really dig in, I find they really zone modern basses in to my sonic concept. I don't like flats on very dark-voiced basses since some of the essential voice/character can get lost. I love the sonic character of the 44-01's and the MK-1 system and find that the flats on that bass sweeten that midrange character and make it really punchy. The MK-1's are great! I also have another 44-01 with nickel rounds that I love too... it just brings out a different character in the bass than the flats.

Old flats on a 44-01 IS a wild mix! Most people say a 44-01 is a modern bright kind of bass.... interesting idea!

This one. Probably a fuller thicker sound, with out ans much top end bite? Never had an -01.

Well, it took a while, but I strung it up with nickels on thursday and gigged it tonight ... the new bass done good :)

While we were playing, the promoter overheard "he's a really funky bass player" ... this is what we like to hear :)
