Lakland Owners Group #51

sorry to hear that. Did you contact Lakland directly? What is your impression about customer support?
I must admit I've never had "issues", only things that I personally would like other way, but Lakland were always fast, supporting and generous.

My problem started before the company's buyout by the Hanson guys. Before that, I was so frustrated that I'd put black electrical tape over the logo so I wouldn't be advertising for the company. Then I finally bought a fabulous Fender P to use on stage and left the 55-02 in its case. When I heard that there were new owners, I contacted them and mentioned all the promises that had been made before, and they jumped on it right the hell away.

I don't want to go too far into it on a thread that's supposed to be about Loving the Lākland, but suffice it to say, I have a new 55-02 and some great impressions of the new guys in charge.

Wanted to share this with you guys.

ho hum....what a mediocre bass.....:)

Thanks very much! On the side note...I think fretless Glaubs are pretty rare.

yup...but sweet they are! I have only seen 2 in person.....pretty nice....someday maybe!

Oh man, I'm trying to get some pics of my LOG p5 up.
Used it at a couple of gigs last weekend with the stock round wounds on. Was pretty good. But I think, on RW boards, I'm a flats type of guy. So I stuck some T.I. flats on it & used it last nite-superb!
Log > STL-600 > Berg AE410 .
Next gig I'll be trying it thru the Walkabout !!!!

glad you like it!!! preety sweet basses huh? what are you using yo post pics? photobucket is the easiest route...once you get the hang of it it is easy...even for an old Doude like me!

I'm kinda shy about uploading these.. :hiding:

VERY nice.....pics are great!

Thanks for the heads up!

I'm so into the P sound right now, that I'm nearly dying of GAS for a Lakie fretless P....

I know I could go with the other brand, but I love my LOG bass P5 so much right now, why would I switch brands?

try to get a glaub and buy a fretless neck from lakland....I think a fretless P would be GREAT!

No hard feelings, right? :D I still own a Lakland and I love it and I play it a lot, so I'm still ok:hiding:

yup you are....and I kinda agree with you...the Decade shape does not thrill me too much....but the sound? oh my!

Just picked up used '03 DJ4... I think it has aero pickups. Sound really wonderfull... More aggressive than most passive jazzbasses that im used to, and little "fuller". I had one gig already with this one and its coming to next gig also ;) :bassist:

congrats! if the pickups are original, they are aeros..GREAT sounding bass you got there! congrats! have you checked out: Link Removed yet?

IIRC, Skylines had Bartolinis, not Aeros in them
Anyway, great bass, congrats!

Denis!!!! I thought you knew your Lakie history!!! Marcel is right below....

DJs with Bartolinis? I am afraid that's not correct. DJs were Aeros when they started, Skyline or not. Later they changed them, but in 2003 they were Aeros. Easy to check though: remove the plate and check the leads from the pickups to the pots. Aeros have black and white plastic coated leads. Check this post by Mr. Matt:

This was exactly like my first Lakland. The gateway drug:-) Great one, man!

Funny! I agree..mine was a BG followed closely by a DJ...

Yeah, Markus has a way of doing that to all of us... Every time he composes something new (ie paint color/scheme), he sends us to the corner to pout!!!

He sure does!!!

Dang, it just gets better and better! Fantastic, my friend.

You need a blue one, though.:D

...and a teal one.....maybe even a 5 banger!

I've got a quick question. A couple months ago I picked up my first Lakland, a 55-02 and I love it. Best bass I've owned and I can't put it down. Now it's not my only active bass so I know you're not supposed to leave them plugged in when you're not playing, this is common knowledge to me. Here's my question. With this bass can I just pull out the volume knob and put it in passive mode and leave it plugged in? Does that drain the battery or not?

nope...sorry...

re-twiddling .

GREAT word Jess!!!! "re-twiddling"...got to use that one!!!:hyper::D

I made a little video with my new (used '03) DJ4:
YouTube - ‪Afrofusion‬‏
i just LOOOVE this bridge pickup sound!

man! what sweet playing!

I need to stop wathcing and stop listening to all of the stuff on here and practice more I guess.

I mostly understood that :p
I have one more question (for now), will having the bass in passive mode draw less current (or power, whichever is technically correct) than having the bass set "flat" in active mode?

I ask because I've had my 55-02 for well over a year and I've only had to change the battery once and I would leave it plugged in, in passive mode, on a stand during a church service (after playing music), or whatever...

All this is too much for my brain to comprehend :help: :D

Luke - my batteries last a long time as well....I just keep mine plugged in between songs...think about it...church is an hour to an hour and a half? practce before maybe another hour or 2...that is only 3-5 hours...as Gus says...they are designed so that batteries last 200+ hours....I have changed my batteries a few times...more out of "fear" than any actual reason and most of the time they are high ion the scale when tested in a batetry meter.....of course I HAVE seen a friend whose Conklin failed in teh middle of a service and Conklins have NO "fail safe"....so the scramble was fun to watch as he tried to figure out what happened.....tehn had to get the back compartment open (with a screw driver) to change the battery...glad Dan and the gang designed in a "fail safe"....

My Lakie USA Hollowbody Deluxe, always regretted selling my previous one. I do prefer the bartolini's to the chi's myself, for tone and they don't feel as cheap IMO. I'll post some sound clips later this month, I'll be in the studio with this bass recording with an 8 piece funk band. Looking forward to see how the hollowbody fills the mix and if it can cut thru a big band.

GREAT bass! I cannot wait to hear the clips...anyhting for the LOG2 CD? maybe???

Does anyone on the thread have experience/lessons learned on putting a 18v (dual battery) pre in a 55-01/02/94 body? I am seriously looking at putting Mike Pope's new FlexCore in the 55-02 I just picked up. My Q's:
  • Anyone tried a bass with the FlexCore in it? Opinions?
  • Route a new battery slot in the back OR just leave the second battery rattling around in the control bay?
  • Is there an aftermarket supply where I can pick up a nice battery holder, like the Fishman that Lakland put in (at least, they did in '07)?

I also might just pick up a second 55-02. morrisonhendrix has a nice black 'n' maple FS at a great price...but I am on a "one bass a month" ration :) Doubt it will still be around at the end of the month, but we'll see. :hiding:

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer heat. NJ is sticky and hot right now!

Hess

Hess..sticky is not the word for it here in Chicago! I am glad Marcel pointed you in the right direction...I was going to put you in teh same spot....I asked Carl Pedigo about this type of mod and he was not sure what it would really accomplish....he said..."if we thought it would have sounded better with 18 volts, we would have designed it with 2 batteries!".....of course that is a "typical" answer for him....

Good point! I need to do some reference "before" clips. Though, no slapping for me. Hmmm...then why do I need a bass with 19mm spacing? (wait...shields up, Sulu, lest the EBMM/19mm radioactivity infect this thread! :spit:)

This project is probably going to wait until I pick up a second 55-02 OR I get impatient. The half life on that is about 1 month.

no problem Hess.....I dont slap but LOVE the spacing....you sound ALOT like me in the patience department...just ask some of my friends who know me here....and BTW:

DO IT NOW!!!!

My band headlined the City of Asheville July 4th concert/fireworks display last weekend and for the show I pulled out my very first Lakland I ever bought, my '07 44-01. Still the best 44-01 I own, IMO, but it doesn't get played much in my regular rotation. Nailed the groove all night with it!

GREAT PICS!!!! that light makes that natural so delicious!!!

US made doesn't necessarily mean that a bass is better made of will play better. .....when I tried to buy a US Fender P5, all the ones I played felt like $100 basses. But every Skyline I've played has been top notch. I can't say the same for the Fenders. YMMV.

AMEN...AMEN AND AMEN!!!

sorry to hear that. Did you contact Lakland directly? What is your impression about customer support?
I must admit I've never had "issues", only things that I personally would like other way, but Lakland were always fast, supporting and generous.

Jess - for some reason - had a hard time getting his issues fixed...I think things were going south at the company at that time and dan had other things on his mind...it took JP and Bo to finally fix the years long issue! I am glad they did....

Hello. Today I received an immaculate Skyline 55-64 (Glaub) from a TB'er here thru the classifieds. Being my first Lakland I don't know if this is characteristic of them or not. The tone control significantly reduces the volume when turned counterclockwise past 50%. Obviously it reduces the highs, but the more you turn the knob, the less volume you get down to almost none with all the highs rolled off. I played it thru two different amps. Never noticed this on any of my Fenders or my Sadowsky. Any ideas?
Al

I was gonna say contact Lakland - sounds like a wiring or pot issue...but you already did!!!

So I finally got my first Lakland in the mail on Monday. Bought it from the TB classifieds. A 2004 44-02. I love the feel and sound.
Do I get assigned a number now? :D

VERY sweet and welcome tothe club! i love cherry burst!

Thanks. I did just that a couple of days ago and, gotta say, their customer service is fantastic. Leo at Lakland offered to fix the bass at no charge or send me the part. This is a used (though only 4 months since purchase) bass and even though the warranty is not transferable, they're still standing by their product. "Eggcellent, Smithers!!!"

Al

sure is!!! they take care of their peeps....."transferable" or not!!!

Hi Friends!

I'm a bassplayer from Hungary. I'm a new boy in this here.
I have a Lakland Joe Osborne 5, with J-Retro eq, Skyline modell, but custom color,

GREAT bass and nice sound....I assume that is a TV show in Hungary?

Nice work ... you and the band :)

Andy

I agree!

You have a KILLER Bass too!

+1000 to the quotes above..
