Lakland Owners Group #51

Picked up this fretless beauty from the TB classifieds. 2006 55-02, black and ebony. It is in great condition, and right out of the box the Lakland scale felt and LH-3 tone sounded just RIGHT! So want to bring it for the gig on Saturday, but I will leave it for some future live joy. GHS black nylon tapewounds are going on it when I get it set up next week.

Now...the pics.

Nice Hess! You're a GASaholic! :p great triumvirate you got there.

Funny...I thought I would be removing the guard immediately, but I like how it looks, and I hate having to deal with the screw holes. Might go complete blackout at some point.

I'll let you know on the tapewounds. I just put LaBella's Deep Talking flats on my 55-02 fretted, and I love it. They are tense as aircraft cables, but the sound is awesome. Two very different sets on Saturday night will be the first time out with that setup, but rehearsals have been nice.

Nice :) If I didn't already own almost the same thing (minus the tort guard) I'd be very jealous.

Please let us know how it goes with the tapewounds. I enjoy the sound of tapes on my RA Deep 5 (ebony 'board, fretless) and of course with the black/ebony combo on the 55-02 it would just complete the look. Until I take that plunge with the 55-02 it's Labella flats for me.

Andy

Hah! Well, this one happened for a very funny reason. My wife plays cello, and is joining both of the groups I'm out with on Saturday for a few tunes, playing parts I wrote. On Monday, she was going over them with her cello teacher, and her teach said "If he's going to do string arranging, he should get a fretless."
She comes home, I peek at the classifieds, and this one had just gone up (actually, back up, as it was part of a trade two weeks ago). So, sometimes even your wonderful spouse gives you GAS!

I think I'm done for a while ("Hi, I'm Matt, and it's been two days since I peeked at the classifieds.") I got three great deals, three great instruments, and I can enjoy them on some great collaborating and gigs coming up in the next few months.

Ah...one more post, then I'll stop hijacking the thread (I clearly haven't mastered the basspraiser "17 quotes in one post" technique):
Are the necks on the Lakland fretless thinner? I haven't gone for a tape, but my hands tell me that they are. And, comparing the headstocks, I swear it looks like a 1/16" or more thinner than my fretted. I can't believe how smooth and easy it plays...

So, my personal trifecta is complete: 55-02 fretted, 55-01 modded, and a 55-02 fretless. Not that I am stopping at three...I mean, I have to get at least one bass in Markus Orange, right? Oh, and a custom PJ...and a special J-J like basspraiser just listed...and something with Chisonics...and a Scheff...and...:hiding:

Thanks for the pic. I was actually considering a tort pickguard on my black 55-94, and that sealed the deal.

Now, someone with 3 Laklands needs to join the Link Removed site... Just sayin'...

I suppose I could break out the caliper... However, I suspect the difference you are feeling is the lower action due to the lack of frets. If I measure for differences on my three, I'm afraid it would not be a true comparison. My JS4 LPB Fretless (MLF) is a Skyline. Whereas my JS4D BlueTrans R/W and 4-94D TobaccoBurst Ebony Fretted (no dots) are both US models. So, some slight differences are expected between the US and Skyline necks.

With the dozen or so Lakland basses I've had through my hands in the past few years, I will admit, I've noticed some of the Skyline heads vary in thickness. On the thinner ones, I've noticed a bit of forward warp between the E and G string tuning pegs. Take a look closely along the top face of the head for a slight forward bow. Where-as the slightly thicker heads didn't seem to show this. If due to high tension from all strings, it may be that the slightly thicker head stock resolved this symptom and justifies the slight change... Of course all pieces of wood will have various tendencies - even if from the same tree. I'm just thinking aloud of course.

I've loved mine ever since I got it. Leo picked me out a nice, light one. I added a J-Retro and White pearl pguard and BOOYOW! It's a real player and looker too. IMO, of course :D

Nice Tom....pics please???

I really think it "finishes" the bass!

I wish Photobucket did not "dumb down" the pics....these look so much better in high res!

Andy, the GHS tapewounds are fantastic. They play and sound great, and certainly complete the look on a blacked-out bass. :) Here's a clip, albeit a VERY loose one! (background drum loop from wikiloops) About three hours into playing my first fretless. This is with the bridge pup soloed, bridge coil only, through my Line6 LD400 on the "R&B" amp model.

Looks nice. Off I go to allparts for my 55-01...and, as for the J-J, I think that my GAS is in check for at least the forseeable future. (no, really...you can all stop chuckling now. :))

I'm actually a member there, too. However, I find that there is more lively discussion, on a broader range of topics, here on TB. In addition, I can only manage so many social destinations. 2 (FB and TB) are about my maximum.;-)
