Update on USPS shipping: they max size at 108 in (length plus 2xwidth and 2xdepth) so 52+2(21)+2(9)=112 in. which means the bass is off to fedex. Grr.

Whoever you talked to didn't know what they were talking about. The max 108 should be width and girth not 2X any measurement. I have sent plenty of things roundabout the size you just listed.

Yeah, Dan, I sent an EBMM, which takes a slightly bigger box than the normal guitar box (lenghtwise) and shipped it to Canada via USPS Priority, there was no problem with any USPS size limitations.

Some bonehead just bought my bc rich guitar on ebay. turns out he lives in ALASKA???
I had shipping listed at $55.00 in lower 48...he bid anyway.
buy it now...so now sold.
I went to UPS today shipping 2 basses...they said I need to this guys guitar via USPS due to him having some dirt road address not in their system. He DOES have a po box...I was going to go to USPS tomorrow to ship it snail mail parcel post and pray it makes it.
after he pays the additional $75.00 on top of the paid $55 already..
They want $130 to ship it to alaska.
BUT! the box is a bit more than you said...
I did put the dimensions into the USPS calc online to get the quote and price???
so I think this deal is toast...

Nope. Nope. Nope. If you clearly indicated 'lower 48' or 'CONUS' in your listing and someone buying can't understand that then you have no obligation to ship to them IMHO. I have had this happen w/ international buyers and promptly simply refunded their payment and filed a complaint through eBay to have my final value fees refunded as well. Re-list and move on. You shouldn't have to lose anything on that deal. Or... you can also just tell the buyer what the deal is and ask him to pay the extra. If they disagree then you can both agree to cancel the deal.

Looks like I just scored a 44-60 from a friend locally. I don't really play 4 strings anymore,...but I couldn't pass up this deal! He's dropping it off to me on Wednesday, will take it to the gig Thursday night along with my DJ5. Gorgeous instrument, not sure on the year, lakie pups, and really clean condition.

I'd tell you guys the sale price,..but I'm afraid someone might put a hit contract out on me. I'll just say that if i had been feeling really thrifty, I could have spent 100 less and got a Squier VM 77 instead. Let me just say that it absolutely rocks to have good friends, indebted to ya Tim!!!! Will try to return the favor one day.

Ha! Couldn't get upset even if I hadn't just scored a great deal! And truly, no superiority complex on how many strings a guy uses. I started playing waaaaayyyyyy back in 1968 when "gasp" there were no 5 string basses! Didn't make the switch till sometime in the late 80's, then went to 5,...6,...and yes,...even 7 strings!!!

It is going to take some adjustment to play a 4 again,...have become so accustomed to having the B there that a bass just feels nekkid to me now without it. Somehow though,....I think I'll be able to suffer through it. Who knows, maybe I'll completely revert and go back to 4 bangers only,...although I kinda doubt it. I do believe it's gonna be an enjoyable ride back down this road though, .

Depends on what you mean by that. When I'm playing my basses, of course I'm playing four strings as well as the fifth. But then, I'm also playing *three* strings, right?

If you mean that all 5ver players can also just ship out a 4-banger and wail, then that's not true of all of us. I've already mentioned too often how I switched to 5 so I could ignore the first 5 frets without losing the notes down there, so switching to 4 would require re-thinking the fretboard. No superiority anything--just simple fact.

I also detected no superiority in Voodoo's post.

Players like me who use the G above the 15th fret and the B for more than the low D, just can't play what we've wrote or cover some modern tunes on a 4. I've tried to make 4s work multiple times, because they're easier to control while moving around on stage and look better IMO . The most significant benefit of a 5 string (something that can make certain basslines easier to play than on a 4) is the shorter stretches and less shifting needed by using the B above the 5th fret for runs/lines that are played using the 4's E and lower frets.

I'm now in a cover band that I can finally play my 4 strings in for almost all the tunes . And I'm still planning on building a 3 string someday.

Agreed.

1. There was no hint of superiority
2. I can play a 5 or a 4 string, but I can't switch back and fourth very easily (my brain just doesn't work that way), so I made a decision a few years back to only buy 4's as I felt I was in more control while playing a 4 and I didn't need the extra 5 notes. However, I do miss being able to play some of the 1st position E string stuff on the B string.

I thought about a 55-02, but as funny as it sounds I don't like odd numbers. Really, I would never use the "B". I have had 5 and 6's in the past but, alas, I'm a 4 stringer. The 44-02 just does everything that I want tonally, it's literally the tone and feel that I have been searching for over the 24 years I have been playing. It my new standard for comparison. The only down side is that the previous owner did not use a corrosion inhibitor on the saddles and adjustment screws and they are rusted and fused and cannot be adjusted so I have to order new ones on Monday, I hope that they are not too expensive.I may keep my Carvin. I have A/B'd all of my basses to day and the Carvin is VERY close to the 44-02 with more of a hifi flavor. Sadly, my hand made Warwick Streamer is the furthest away from what I want tonally so it's on the sales block even though it plays incredibly well. I though about buying Barts to see if that would help, but in the end decided against it. Lakland has me in it's grasp...maybe a 44-AJ, how's it compare to the 44-02?

you may really like an AJ....VERY different (in a good way) from your -02....

The surface rust is not really the issue, the height screws, 5 of 8 were so corroded that they (the one that I tried) became brittle and rounded off after a good long soak in wd40. There is no getting around replacing the saddle assemblies. Oh well.

THAT is what I really want...
But was thinking could settle on the stock CAR color to make it less money.
Honestly, who knows? I do not have anything I could let go of...maybe in the not to distant future I will change my mind? Who knows? Need spend more time with the Decade to see if that would be what I would really want to lay down for?
Honestly I would rather have a custom 44-07 in ferrari red if they would make one of those....

Hi all you Lakland lovers. Allow me to indulge in a short story if if I may.
I've been playing the same bass (a Fender Jazz 4 string) for 13 years. I've never really wanted anything else until recently. I'm joining a top 40 R&B band and found out that there are many songs that require those lower notes. I remember Stu Hamm telling me about 20 years ago that in LA it would be hard to get a studio gig unless you play a 5 string. I don't live there so I wouldn't know but I could understand why. Anyway I started looking and decide to pick up a Lakland. I picked one up through TB classifieds. I never played one before but they came highly recommended. So anyway, I was a little worried about getting use to the wider neck and all that since I never played a 5er for more then 5 minutes at a time before. I picked up a 55-02. Wow what a nice bass. It sounds great and the action is awesome. I'm very pleased and after playing it about 6 hours a day for 5 days, I've become a Lakland fan. The preamp is good. I hate cheap electronics. The PU are good. The string spacing is perfect. I can still get my fat fingers and thumb between the strings to thump as i see fit. For the money I can't see a better value out there anywhere.
I thought I'd share.

GREAT to hear it! wow! you sure have been playing alot! I was totally awed with my first laklands (all Skylines as well).....the electonics on Most are the same in both Skyline and US models....the QC and CS? best in class.....

For me, an unlined board is a deal breaker. I'd like to get a feet less again one day, but I'm just not confident enough without frets to not need those lines.
