I've felt for some time that the only people making any money in this whole swap/sell GAS-othon are the shippers.

Don't forget Paypal! Definitely the two biggest sort-of hidden costs of GAS, along with time spent posting ads, PM'ing and packing/shipping/receiving the stuff. I sold three basses early last year, and shake my head at how much time it ate up. I've got one to offfload now, then I'm hoping to settle in.

ETA: The whole deal reminds me of investing--the more you trade, the more the costs add up.

The entire process is exhausting...
Often a fun rush.
But Exhausting regardless.

Transaction costs do take a toll, don't they?
especially at the geometric mean rate that some of us (self-included) are making transactions these days.

I have 2 basses and one guitar shipping out to buyers today.
Was going to use UPS as always.
Hub is close to my house.
Fed Ex is a bit of a haul.
But now ya have me thinking?

Usually cheaper by a good amount too. Like 30% cheaper.

UPS 4-9 day - $85
USPS Priority Mail 2-4 day - $75
Fedex Ground 4-7 day - $72

I have done ground for $25-$40 depending on distance, insurance amount etc...(ALWAYS insure it realistically)

Well don't know if anyone remembers but a while back I was having some problems with the bridge pickup. Due to an absolutely hectic schedule and doing a LOT of writing, I just wasn't able to see about having it fixed.

I contacted Lakland and was told that, while they would certainly put in another humbucker if I wanted, this particular person felt that the singles would be the best option, for both sound and reliability. And I was REALLY impressed with that kind of honesty.

So, I took the plunge


EDIT: Oh, and I'd absolutely be interested in getting in on the 2nd LOG CD. I'll let you know when I finish the track, and may have a few more as well.

Right now, for me to ship insured cross-country its:
Size: 52x21x9in.

UPS 4-9 day - $85
USPS Priority Mail 2-4 day - $75
Fedex Ground 4-7 day - $72

That's not too far off from what I paid for UPS ground, insured at $1600. It cost me just under $70 to ship from Charleston SC, to Chicago IL.

That's why its nice to deal locally!

Actually, after years of gear whoring amps and basses, I've finally settled on what I want and only really do it with pedals. The nice thing about pedals is that they only cost 5-10 bucks to ship...seems like a much saner hobby.

I can see a few more transactions in the not too distant future, then I want to sit tight and enjoy all of the hard work that was put forth to obtain these basses.

Local is for sure the best.
Sadly, out of the 4 music stores in my area ( 1 GC chain store and 3 mom and pop stores ) I can never EVER find any of the basses I would want to buy )
So I have no choice but to wheel and deal on the net for basses.

+1, finally getting the brood to be what I need. And also moving to a town in the not too distant future where the nearest music store will be 80 miles away.

Of the current (gulp) nine basses I own, only one was purchased new, and none were purchased locally, and I live in what you would think is a hot market for instruments (LA). Not really so, as far as I can tell. Oh I can buy black F------rs or I----zs all day long, if that was what I was into, which definitely it is not.

So I pay the shipping cabal out the nose just like the rest of you.

I gather the frequencies are selectable on each of the tone stages.
Care to share what frequencies you found to work best on the 55-01 ? Or did you make the choice available as switches on the front ?

The way it works is the low and high freqs can be jumpered to the lower frequency option. The mid freqs can either be jumpered or switched. I have left the defaults, and have found the low and lowmid to be very useful. I might try jumpers in the hi mid and high at some point, but for now it sounds so good and gives me enough variety that I'm not ready to rip it apart. Note also that on a 01 or 02, after two switches things start to get cramped. I have two DPDTs for coil selection on my Nordstrand DCs, so I'll have to go with jumpers to change the freq if I want to. Mike includes plenty of jumpers with the unit.

Do you have a FedEx account? From here in central NY state I am consistantly shipping basses for between $30 and $50 depending on distance. And, while I have noted this last FedEx debacle from what I am reading is that the shipping issues are pretty evenly distributed across all the major carriers. I am also fortunate enough to have a local terminal that takes really good care of me to the point that I have received early morning phone calls asking if I would like my package held at the terminal because they remembered that I prefer that, Blew me away. And, for this latest mess they have been as helpful and respondant as I could expect. i don't think I would get that level of service from UPS and I KNOW that ain't happening with the USPS. So, for now my allegiance remains with FedEx.

I am with you all on the fees, time and shipping but for me it's like someone else said, there's no better way for me to get to experience this variety of instruments. The local scene is just void of anything quality. Plus, buying quality used gear from quality TB folks goes a long way as well.

I just paid $85 to ship a bass from NY to washington about an hour ago UPS.

Update on USPS shipping: they max size at 108 in (length plus 2xwidth and 2xdepth) so 52+2(21)+2(9)=112 in. which means the bass is off to fedex. Grr.

I worked for a university at their central receiving, getting packages from every possible courier. I remember getting many packages larger than that from UPS. Only restriction i remember is weight, but even then there were other UPS options.

Some bonehead just bought my bc rich guitar on ebay. turns out he lives in ALASKA???
I had shipping listed at $55.00 in lower 48...he bid anyway.
buy it now...so now sold.
I went to UPS today shipping 2 basses...they said I need to this guys guitar via USPS due to him having some dirt road address not in their system. He DOES have a po box...I was going to go to USPS tomorrow to ship it snail mail parcel post and pray it makes it.
after he pays the additional $75.00 on top of the paid $55 already..
They want $130 to ship it to alaska.
BUT! the box is a bit more than you said...
I did put the dimensions into the USPS calc online to get the quote and price???
so I think this deal is toast...
I am really ticked now...arrrrrrrrgh!!! :scowl:
