Now that is sweet! Much better look, IMHO, than the quilted maple bursts Lakland offers. I'm considering the transition to a 5-er, and in its price range the 55-02 has so far been my favorite. (Unless I want to cough up an additional 2 g's to get a bass I shall not name here.)

Markus' son has the red one... Goblin is her name, she is so FRIGGIN HOT!! And, the '51 was the first one built and WAS NOT considered a prototype... just a Lakland builder's personal bass that drove TBers NUTS and motivated Lakland to offer the bass to the public . I should've kept her! She's in Australia now.

Tell me, does anyone know if those STUNNING flame-top 44/55-02s will be avaliable as a fretless? I've never been entirely clear on the options list for the limited edition basses...never seen a chi-sonic LE lakland either, now I come to think about it...

It would require delving into the future-house fund to get it, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. You're only young and stupid once, eh?!

A few of those necks seem to come from a pretty rosy species of maple.
They are beauties....

Speaking of necks, I have a late 2002 US Glaub PJ. To me, this bass, with the thinner J neck, has a "flatter" neck radius than my Fender Jazz basses. (I'm sure there's a more technical term...)

Do the US and Skyline Joe Osborn's have a similarly flatter neck radius like this BG PJ?

I've been eyeing those Skyline JO's with the block inlays...like I can really afford another bass right now.

Believe me, I love this bass - sonically it's exactly what I want in a P, but it's a neck profile thing. So I was thinking that a Lakland neck would fit the bill. If I could just find a Lakland maple neck with a 1.5" nut, I would put it on the Fender body, but I know Lakland probably would not like that one iota.

More to the point, that could be a tricky fit at the neck pocket. Not positive, though.

Have you thought about nabbing a beat up Dunn, trading the neck for a maple (most folks flip for blocks), and getting a refin on the body?

GREAT idear there! then he could sell teh blocked neck to pay for the maple and part of the refin!

A Lakland 44-AJ charcoal just left TX en route to mah house. Pretty excited.
