4) He just "hates" the term "Custom" for a "regular" production model.... (he IS a writer....for whatever that is worth)

Here's a few shots of the 2009 Cataloge (Catalog) regarding the Darry (actual typo in the print) Jones Signature Shoreline Series page. The Upper Horn comes back parallel to the neck in this photo.

Maybe the slight change came about when the Signature Series were dropped?

I recently bought my first Lakland. I bought it through the classifieds here, but because I'm from Canada, I had it shipped to a friends place in Tennessee. I had to wait almost a month before I went down to get it :bawl:

I just got back into playing bass last summer, after a long time lay off... you know how life just seems to get in the way. I am (at least for know while both my wife and I work shift work, and with two kids under 8) a bedroom player, and I feel kinda spoiled to have such an awesome bass. I have a G&L 2500 that was my first 5 string, but the neck was kinda fat for me. With the 5502 it feels like I'm playing my 4 string Jazz, but with an extra B string.

I do have one question for the group. The nut seems to have been widened around all the strings- as seen in this pic

Is this normal for these basses?? It doesn't seem to affect the play, and there is no string slippage to speak of. Also the push/pull knob will come off the post if I don't squeeze it, but this too isn't a problem since I generally just leave if active.

Anyways, I'm totally loving this bass, and will probably sell one or two of my other basses. I don't see them getting much use after this...

Congrats on your Lakland. I love my 55-02 and I have the same configuration black and maple.

I just looked at mine. It's got a tiny bit of space around the strings, but not like that. Looks like it was filed for a larger string gauge than are on there now.

Congrats! Lakland 5 strings DO feel like a 4 string jazz w/ an extra B string: thin neck (front to back) and the strings are spaced just right.

That nut has been tinkered with. That's not normal. Someone maybe wanted to use extra heavy strings and had the slots widened. If it doesn't bother you then COOL.

As for the knob, try swapping it for another one on the bass so the worn one won't be used on the push/pull pot. Or apply a little paint to the pot post to make it slightly bigger so the knob seats tighter. :-)

Edit: BTW you are "Labman72".... I'm a Med Lab Tech born in '71. Do we share the same occupation and age (almost)?

Jedi Bass- Yes. I Work in a small hospital up here in Canada.

My friends place in TN is over by Clarksville. When I go there for my other passion, wild Turkey hunting... I barely had time to sleep, but I'll see what I can do.

I'll probably play the bass for a while, since it seems to be performing well- in the meantime I'll look for a repair tech in the area to fix it.

The Carvins took around 8 weeks. I'm supposed to get the 44-64 within 2 weeks or so from when it was ordered. I could have had one instantly if I liked the Inca Silver one at our local store. It just didn't do it for me. I'm a picky son of a gun! :rollno:

He's pretty easy to find on the West side of downtown on The Queensway. Super nice guy - I hung out there Saturday afternoon between load-in and a show and had a great time. I think he had about 30 Laklands on the wall and he apologized for not having a big inventory on hand. Considering the size of his showroom, that was about 65-70% of his display space, so I didn't consider it a small inventory at all.

Yup...this was an interim design when DJ and Lakland parted ways. A few like this were sold but not many. The model was kind of put on hold (lakland would make a US model if asked) but it was not advertised.

When Dj And lakland worked out their new agreement the modified model kinda evaporated.....

Nah...not that at all! They just do runs that they think will sell and the plant that makes the skylines is being a little more particular about things like mixing necks etc.

If you really want a maple neck...ask! There are usually a few spare necks around that may be able to be swapped out....dunno....no promises but you can always ask
