Haha thanks guys. Yeah I don't know that I'll be exploring any control cavity. I am completely enamored by the amount of sounds I'm able to get out of this bass. However, I'm also surprised how wide the neck is on this thing. I'm using to 4-string jazz basses. I think the last one I owned was a Geddy, and that has the neck like a guitar.

I will say this... I have never played a bass with action as low as this one. It's pretty insane. I'll take additional photos and post them.

no wonder you think it is "wide"...Geddy's are pretty narrow....you will get used to it!

I think you will continue to discover the tones...55-02s are VERY versatile basses!!!!

yup....Lakland prides themselves on being able to have very low action...

In order to best hear the effect of the toggle (coil tap), solo the bridge pickup while changing the toggle position.

good idea....

...and adding some treble (at least temporarily) to open up the top end so you can hear the subtleties.

Thanks dude!! Well the strings are still bright, but comparing to what I remember with my son's maple fb 44-02, this bass has more snap. There is this crisp snap to every note....which I really like. Just gives it a little more articulation. Love how this neck feels! I'll keep my ears open as the strings settle a little more. Hope this helps!

I agree...my CB550 definitely has more "snap"...good way to put it! Dan Lakin calls it "brittle"...I would not go that far...

More articulation and character....notes seem brighter

Yeah...I do hear a difference, but in the mix? Jury is still out...nothing that couldn't be EQ'd in or out.

dunno about that....my CB550 has a very unique sound in the mix...still nice and snappy....you CAN hear it for sure..

The amount of effect is really asymptotic for those last two (translation, they are the least impactful and much less-so than the other four)

I disagree. I have a well worn pair of Puma Suedes in black with wide white laces that would look better with that bass.

That may be, and on a guy I bet they look awesome, but I'm not a guy and I have to work around my.......um......nevermind.

I'm with you. That bass needs to rock a room to pieces. An LBD and heels are a little too dressy for that one.

You've obviously never seen how rawkin' an LBD and heels can be when I'm wearing them, then. Would it make you feel better if I wore the heels with metal spikes on them? I could compromise there.

Yeah...Glad you dudes are getting that from this bass....that was exactly my intention.

I got a bit more of the raw video and some board audio from our show the other night (the same show from which I posted the earlier video) and got this edit of my solo on one of my tunes from the night. Not bad... not particularly proud of my clunky phrasing toward the middle of it, but whatever. The 44-02 shines through quite clearly, in spite of the player getting in the way at times... enjoy!

I don't wanna kindle another wood debate, so I'll just briefly post my .02.

2 Pieces of the same wood type can show more variability (in terms of density and resonance) than 2 pieces of different wood species. I believe that if I handed anyone a series of the same 10 basses differing only in fretboard or body wood type (yeah, I know there are always other little differences as well) and asked them, blindfolded, to tell me which fretboard or body wood belonged to which bass, noone would have a clue what he was playing. Just my free .02.

I'd get it on this little discussion, but I'm too tired tonight so all I'm gonna say is.....

I just want to say that I'm absolutely in love with the aesthetics of almost all Laklands that I see. Sadly, I haven't been won over by the Skylines to the point where I just sell everything to get one, but I also haven't had the chance to play anything more than a Skyline because no one wants to carry US Laklands in KS! Although I'm not really in the market (being as though I'm 18 and college is around the bend), I think I'll fall in love with one once I get my hands on a US Lakland.

By the way MarkusBass your pictures of your Laklands have graced my computer backgrounds for quite a while now LOL! I just changed it to the beauty that you posted a couple of pages back, and I enjoy all the banter back in forth about the bass, as I did a little reading and read the previous installments of your threads lol.

Anyway, I'm jealous of most of you because of the beauty of the Laklands, and it'll only get worse when I get to play a USA one =D

Sure can. I had all sorts of trouble with the pre in my first 55-02. Not the same pre, but the fact remains that sometimes a pre's got a scenting issue or something.

any suggestions for a preamp upgrade then? cuz im pretty sure that is the problem....just wanted to see if anyone else had similar issues.

I am sure you will flip for US Laklands when you do finally play one. I did!
I bought 5 US Laklands sight unseen and never played one first and was VERY impressed with each and every one of them.
I would say if you find yourself in financial position to shell out for one , yet cannot play it first, buy it anyway!! hahaha!! you WILL love it.

I have a 55-01 and it has quite a buzz and static when i plug in to my amp. its not my amp or any of my pedals......could it be the preamp bein fuzzy?

I had the same issue with one of my 44-02's. It turned out to be a missed solder on the back of the neck pickup. I re-soldered and problem solved. Does yours buzz more on one pickup vs the other? If so, this could be the issue. Call Lakland, even if it is used, they will help regardless of the issue.

+1. I've never found two basses that sound exactly alike anyway, so I'd have a really hard time chalking up the difference to fretboard wood.

Wonder what Carl would say since he's had the means to put different necks on the same bass many many times??

Because, if for example, two ash/maple 44-94s sound different from each other then wouldn't you expect them to sound MORE different if variables WERE altered... like fretboard wood?
