My guess: Stock, it's one of the most expensive models Lakland offers, and the Skyline DJs get so much praise--so folks aren't inclined to pay up for the US one. Similar story for the US HBs.

I don't know about best but I really like the one I picked up a month or so ago. Coming from 4 string jazz necks the first 5er I tried was a Squier Active Deluxe. Decent sounding bass but I could never get comfortable on the fat neck. The 5501 neck just feels like home. The 35 scale isn't noticeable. I may upgrade the electronics at some point but it's workable stock.

How does the sound of the skyline DJ compare to the Fender MIA Jazz? Currently can't get my hands on one to demo that has a maple neck.

What I am looking for is that classic aggressiveness from the Jazz bass that helps it sit in a mix yet stick out more than a P. I don't want anything that sounds too smooth.

I have a skyline DJ for sale with rosewood. I can do sound clips if you're concerned about an aggressive sound...it's loaded with Aeros and I think it sounds great. Actually, there's an AC model for sale as well out there. Maple neck

His tone is killer on that. It's pretty wide open of course for bass. If it sits in the mix like a Fender does on a rock record too, I will probably get one. I'm not in buying mode just yet though.

Hate to say so, but I'm considering leaving the Lakland club. I love my 55-60 but it's missing something. Every time I use it I like the playability and stuff, but I miss some kind of punch, low end and tightness. It's not the strings, it's not me ('cause my vintage Fender does have it) and I'm afraid it's the bass... It's a tough decision which I haven't made definitively yet, but it's a serious option.

I'm a happy owner of a lakland decade and I wonder if I could replace the bridge saddles with threaded ones in order to reduce string spacing a little bit. would regular fender ones fit the lakland bridge?

Not so fast! Sounds like you need to check out some new pickups.
I have read/heard good things about the Aguilar AG 5J-HC pickups.

I had a pair of those pickups in my USA Spector BO.
The AG 4J HC.
They were amazing!
Paired with the aggie OPB-3 pre, blow the house down.
If I ever get another bass with J pups, I am for sure replacing them with the aggie set up.

the AC has the Lakland/Hanson pickups...somewhat more modern than the Aeros.

I wasn't diggin the Aero's w/the Classic 4 band, switched to a set of Aguilar 4J-70's & couldn't be happier!
Thought about the HC's but ended up with the singles, either way they're great pickups!
