Lead Guitarist a Weasel...

well that explains it. in the pic, your thumb and the mustard were in focus and the stuff in the bowl wasn't. I just took a stab based on what I saw. Now on to those natto beans. they are indeed dreaded and epic. i tend to view them as more on the dreaded side than the epic side. but again- to each his own. you wanna eat nattos? go for it. you want to put mustard on sweetened puffed rice breakfast cereal? go for that too. i'm rootin' for ya 100%!
I knew I could count on you! :)

I don't think The OP was the BL. Seems like it was a democratic deal.
Anyway i think he just came to vent. It's all cool. Bands can be a cruel and unusual mistress at times.
They can also be a drunk guy requesting you play some really obscure "Ozzy" with unrelenting misguided vigor at 1:40 AM -tress.
Anyhow I hope your future is full of Pretenders goodness like that chain gang song. I could dig that after 4 beers for sure -in a bar type situation!

OMG, i cant believe i read 7 pages of this. I'll be sorry, i just know it, but i just love hearing people being called Weasels.

Zar- on the good side, sounded good is important, i applaud you there. I have been hired to fill in for people and i become embarrassed that the band isnt embarrassed because they dont get embarrassed. I end up knowing THEIR songs better than they do. People like us who want quality will have a hard time. Some people just want a buck, some people just want to say "they did a gig", and some just want attention. If weasel wants to spread crap about you, well, your standards will overall speak for themselves. You'll be the guy people look for when they want it "right".

On the other hand, the situation is probably for the best. While you get along with the others, just think how are you going to feel in 2 monthes, when the singer still doesnt know the lyrics to the 12 songs, and the drummer still drops the beat. Things like that usually dont change.

We had 5 guys come into a gig a few weeks ago and kept requesting Slayer. I felt like saying, yea we know a bunch, but we're just being dix and not playing any. If I didn't know it the first time you requested it, I probably don't know it the next ten times either.

You can't be to careful. :D
I don't know. If you miss the Careful off-ramp, you end up here:

OP, I think you need some education in being a BL.

You started the band. Seems to me you needed to put your BL hat on and make decisions in the best interest of YOUR band.

Seems like you retreated and let the other guy take over.

Just curious, how were you going to get gigs?

Sounds like the OP sort of just met with the husband/wife duo and the guitarist was someone they suggested. None of this sounds like a BL situation at all. Sounds like some people just coming together.

Sounds like a guy who auditioned for a band I was in some years ago. Dude immediately asked if he was in. Then started to do the same thing. Band name suggestions. Song suggestions. Etc. First, he was horrible. We had to tell him we had others to audition. Dude had no funk chops. Couldn't find the 1 for Cut The Cake by AWB. Uh, dude....the guitar part starts right on the 1. Buh bye.

You are correct...I posted an ad looking for a female singer/guitarist for a Tribute band....she responded to my ad. She along with the husband were already involved with a band but we're not happy and wanted to quit and do something different.
We talked, got together with two friends to jam and get a feel for each other. We decided to go ahead with the project and started looking for a drummer and Lead Guitarist. She suggested the "weasle" and I told her if it's who I think it is, I'm not so sure about this guy. We werent getting any hits for a guitarist, so against my gut feeling, I conceded and we tried him out. We rehearsed at the hub/wife house, and all seemed fine.....at first....the rest is history!

My 2 cents,
I can see it from both sides. I agree with the OP that "good enough" is not good enough. It's not that hard to learn songs correctly. I can also see how the guitarist could move at a faster pace. He/she has more free time to invest in personal practice.

Personally I try to avoid people who do not show up prepared. That really rubs me the wrong way. I also hate dislike dealing with the slow lane players. When I hear things like band practice once a week, play out eventually or I just wanna have fun and hang out I run the other way.

For me all these issues need to be addressed up front.

Edit: for phrase correction

If you were not in the band long enough for the married couple to not be a problem, you should THANK the guitarist.

But seriously, bands work on original tunes. Takes time to write them, figure out the arrangements, etc. Its a long process.

Cover tunes on the other hand, are 3 1/2 minutes of verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge - chorus. I mean its literally 2 different chord patterns with a bridge at one part. You learn the song at home, and then make any changes to the arrangement during practice - if you want to make the song a bit more “yours”.

When I have started a band, we would ask around the room “what songs do you guys know?” - and then “what do you want to play?”. Usually there’s 8-10 songs of overlap that everyone knows.

I joined a band once that had a gig in 2 weeks. I didn’t know any of the 25 songs. I had to bring sheet music / cheat sheets to the gig - but I pulled it off.

It might take a while to “perfect” a song and get to where you know where the guitarist or singer wants to go “on the fly” mid-song - but it shouldn’t take too long to get 2-3 sets down, webpage up, band name, etc.

Unless you were forming a non-gigging werkend jam band that no one was expected to work on the songs between practices. That goes nowhere fast.

This is a huge point... any couple in a band is basically one person with two votes. Its also usually one running car with a parts car. Ive never seen a "relationship" within a band that wasnt one capable person constantly trying to rationalize the others dead weight. Id say you dodged a bullet and should find new people to carry out your original plans. Let the 3 of them deal with each other while wasting their time.

So I had this idea to start a Pretenders Tribute band, I play Bass. I placed an ad, found a husband and wife duo, (she Sings/ plays guitar, he plays Keys).
She mentioned a Lead Guitar player, someone I had dealings with a cpl yrs ago. To say the least, I wasn't crazy about the idea, he has an Ego and a bad attitude. She asked me to give him a chance, said "He's a good guitarist". I said I'd go with it, but don't be surprised when poop happens.
We had ONE practice and he wanted to start adding songs, get a Band name and logo and create a website.
Long story short, he's retired and has all the available time to learn songs, the rest of us work for a living. We had about a dozen songs down, some good, others not so good and he wanted to keep adding new songs. In the end, I had to push the issue of Quality over Quantity,to no avail, behind my back he was saying that I lack motovation. I said "I'm Done" and walked.
Now I hear that this jerk is trashing me and spreading lies about me. There are times you'd really like to slap someone!
Why did you agree to let him join the band? Why not say no? Being a "nice guy" and passive has a price.
You knew the guy is a jerk & you allowed him to come in & turn your bandmates against you?

Not to pile on, but this seems like the obvious lesson here.

You found some new people you enjoyed working with, and for some reason allowed them to invite someone you knew you didn't enjoy working with into the project.

I'm sure you won't make that mistake again ;)

Also, I'm not sure why you were the one who quit; it was your project from the get-go, seems like it would have made much more sense to simply say to the husband and wife, "Sorry, I gave it a shot but this guy isn't working for me. Let's find someone else."

Ok- Devils advocate here- Where exactly were you going to play with 12 songs?
