I agree that the game gets tougher and more desperate as the teams go deep into the playoffs. I won't argue the links you've posted, except to say that the Chara hit on Pacioretty is the only one I remember seeing.

I disagree that it was just a "little late" hit on Horton. He was into his third stride after his pass. His head was up, and the hit came from the blind side. Versus, said very little about Horton's condition and local channels told us that he was moving after the game. He did not look like he was trying to get to his feet.

You obviously follow the game much more closely than I do. Until the Eastern Conference Finals, I had been paying attention to the Bruins with a sense of ambivalence, even in the Philadelphia series.

I understand that this thread was started to discuss the Canucks and their drive to the playoffs. I have said before that I agree that Vancouver is the favorite and Boston the underdog. I also understand that this is a forum for bass players.

My comment was a response to the play of Vancouver the "team", not the city. It was also my response to the Bruins seemingly non-physical, afraid to take a penalty, no answer approach, prior to the hit. It was as if Boston would be pushed around in their own building.

I've never been to Vancouver, but sure would like to visit sometime. I hear it's real nice Maybe you could give my 39' Kay the "Royal Spa" treatment.

By the way, I started the thread and despite the local spin I gave the title, it was meant to be a playoffs thread. We usually have one and after looking and not seeing it, I created one with my own bias.

The hit was late. He left his feet. I have a little trouble with "blindside", I still don't understand why a player with his experience was still admiring his pass instead of looking up ice. They teach you not to do that very young and if you don't learn it then...well, this probably happened to you before you became an NHL star playing for the Stanley Cup. I couldn't help but harken to when Lindros got the T-Rex arms at the blue line that year against New Jersey, though.

It's been a rough series and it was a rough game. I always have an issue with the fans and officials being collectively okay with that until someone gets hurt and then stringing up the offending player. Most injuries are unintended and I'm certain that this was not the outcome that Rome was going for. He intended injury the way that all hard checks intend injury, it just turned out worse than that.

Not like the one Dale Hunter caused that year 10 seconds after the goal. (don't remember what that was)

But, he'll get a suspension and he should in this case. I hope Horton is okay. "Outrage" beyond that is...well...

Tom, you suggested that Aaron Rome should be killed for his late hit. That's a little extreme, don't you think?
The hit was late and with the prevalent climate Rome will get a suspension.

Jeff, I heard that at 5-0 AV asked Bobby Lou if he wanted to come out and he said "Don't even think about it." A big mistake in my book - I would have yanked him after the Canucks second own goal, just to wake up the team.

Troy, Dale Hunter ran Pierre Turgeon into the glass from behind while he was celebrating a goal. That was an attempt to injure.

"Those hits are always gonna to be there. Things happen too quickly in the game. Guys put themselves in vulnerable positions. A lot of times you don't mean to do it, but things are just happening too fast."

When the pads were light and there weren't any helmets, guys didn't take each others' heads off -- "accidentally on purpose" or whatever ("the heat of the moment", "the game is too fast and violent to be any different": my favorite excuses for what amounts to childish, un-manly behaviour.) The game has always been fast and violent, but it hasn't always had all the blatant off-the-puck head charging it's got now. The equipment lets it happen and the coaches (at all elite levels) encourage it to happen.

I have been making the same argument about football for years. As equipment makes the individual "safer" it has enabled him to inflict more harm without risk of pain to himself. I can't prove it, but I believe there are more catastrophic injuies than 60 years ago. The helmets of the 1940's were almost laughable. (I wore one.) If you used your head as a ram or spear (typical of today's play), you got your own bell rung, big-time. You could render yourself unconscious. The result: fewer, not more, concussions.

So True,
If everyone had to go back to the pads from the 50's we'd see a lot less predatory hitting.
...or imagine if there were 4 fewer skaters on each team. Thugs would never have a job and the hitting would be tactically different because of the stamina required to play more minutes. A player like Burrows would thrive but he would have to fight his own battles.

FWIW- the Rome hit was too late and too high. He made a choice to follow though with it and he will have to live with the consequences.

We see the same phenomenon on the highway: what with radial tires, ABS braking, air bags, seat belts, computerized crash optimization, yada yada yada, we should be living in the era of the safest roads ever. Horrible, maiming accidents a thing of the past. Of course, reality is different. People consume these safety benefits in the form of driving faster and taking even greater risks. The gear encourages them to think they're safer than they really are.

So, I'm caught up on the news. It looks like they're both out for the duration.

I won't judge whether the punishment fits the crime. It's a done deal.

Too bad for both players, I'm certain that it's not how either of them wanted their seasons to end.

Maybe extremely extreme??? I was pissed..... what can I say? I was speaking figuratively not literally.

But I was mad as hell. Like I said, I was not happy with Boston's answer to Vancouver's physical play in the first two games and in game 3 up to that point. Sort of a "last straw" moment for me.

To me, playoff hockey is by far, the most intense,and exciting of all sports. I sure get caught up in it. The one thing that really impresses me about the NHL is that at the end, all players shake hands..... win or lose.

If anyone took my comment personally, I apologize.

Hell ... I know-dick about hockey even though we have plenty of ice in Montana. I prefer watching women's doubles volleyball in the hot sand with scant clothing and no sticks and pucks involved . But ..... I have been watching the Stanley Finals and ... WOW .... That is some action that the women sand VB players don't usually get involved in. Great Hockey Action.

From my rookie hockey-watching standpoint ... At first ... I thought Vancouver might sweep the ice. But no more ... Indeed .... The Bruins are pissed now and all-bets for the Canucks are off. Vancouver thoroughly got their butts kicked in Game 3.

Whatever happens, I sure hope us bass-players can get along and not check each-other's upright into the wall or high-stick the second position when we see each other in the Future .

It's not-like I added anything useful here but I like Jake deVilliers and Tom Shepp and I hope that World Peace can be achieved at some point in time .

Bob, I ran into a bluegrass fiddler and got on his list for bass players. I told him I was a rookie and merely a "hack of some trades" player, but he seemed interested.

As far as the series goes, I think Boston has to try to maintain the physical pressure on Vancouver. If they can put one behind Luongo early, that could get to him. We'll see. GO BRUINS!
