Hofner 500/1 V62. It's never let me down, I play this every day and use it for every gig. They're a lot less fragile than one would think. After getting this, it took the #1 spot which formerly belonged to my CT. This bass has that sound. It's definitely "the one". Nice baseball bat neck too!

I find that, IMHO, when playing any early Beatles music, it only feels right doing it with a Hofner or at least a short-scale semi-acoustic. BTW You can play anything on a Hofner, as ICM has stated. I remember an Aereosmith concert in which Tom Hamilton played a whole set with a Beatle Violin Bass

My '69 4001 Honeyglow Riki has appeared on every recording I've made with the exception of my '62 RI JV Squire P. My old friend has never stopped bugging me to sell him the ol' girl, which I did it because he made me an offer I could NOT refuse at the most opportune time. Yes, I have visiting rights forever, it will go to his son and I have no kids that I know of.

Between my '92 MIM Precision (stock save for the Badass II and mirrored pickguard), my Tobias (pre-Gibson) Basic 5, and the new Clayton Precision, there's not much we can't handle. There are a couple other Precisions, a Jazz fretless, and an Ibanez in the group too. All of 'em are workhorses, but these have been getting the most play on demos lately.

The one my band says cuts through the mix, cuz it’s pure filth. First year (‘82) passive, all-original ( save the strap buttons) Hamer Cruisebass set neck mahogany with the stock DiMarzios. I’m normally a Fender PJ bass person, but this dukes it out between two loud guitarists with Dr. Z amps, as it’s as nasty as they are.

I have a 74 as well that by any objective measure is a better bass. But there's just something about the heavy ash natural 75 that does it for me.

I play only Jazz basses these days, all equipped with Hipshot Bass XTenders and "series/paralell" modified.


This is my main bass: Lovey (Fender)


Back-up is one of those two Squiers. They are real good basses and could use them as #1 basses any given gig.

Wow! Nice FrankenP. May I ask how it is wired for 3 pickups? I have a dream to do something similar someday.

Three toggles, on/off for each pickup. Then a single volume and tone. No way to blend volumes, and the pickups are not ideally balanced in level. I got it that way, have not seen fit to change it. I usually use the split P pickup alone, sometimes add the Gibson mudbucker to thicken up the sound, really fattens up above the 7th fret. The mudbucker alone lacks definition of the notes, especially near the nut. The bridge pickup (actually from a steel guitar!) I don't like and don't use at all.
