Fenders with flaws are shipped to China. Over there they are branded Squier, because there are no laws for branding in China. Then they return for half the price as fully legal Squiers.
Practice is over rated. Turn up the volume. That makes up for any percievd mistakes.
There is no such thing as string gauges so it is okay to just throw them on anyway and tune them to the correct pitch.
Actually, the tension created from always keeping the GDAE strings in the same orientation and tuned to pitch will cause your bass neck to eventually twist like this...
To avoid this type of costly damage to your bass all you need to do is change up the order of your strings a couple times a year. For instance, go from a GDAE string orientation to a DAEG orientation on your next string change. Problem solved!
