Mosrite guitars were considered by many to be THE guitars for surf music due to their unique shape and sound. The German carved edges were nothing new, but rare and mostly unseen on guitars in the US. Semie Moseley liked the body designs and wacky pickup mounting, but wanted to ensure that his guitars had a distinctive sound as well as appearance. This lead to the prototype bodies being made from several types of wood.
While sitting on the beach and watching the surfers one day, he got the idea to make the bodies from broken and used surfboards. The first prototype proved to have the unheard sound he had been seeking, and from then throughout the late 60s ALL Mosrite guitar bodies were made from surfboards.
