At one point, they also considered a band with Dave Edmunds and a young David Lee Roth. The acronym would have been "LEPER." For obvious reasons, their management nixed the idea. It's like ELP. It was originally to be called HELP and be a Beatles cover band but the H fell off the outside of the venue and dropped on Hendrix and knocked him out. Faced with no guitarist they had to improvise a set based on stuff Keith Emerson knew from The Nice. The stuff about Hendrix choking to death was caused by him passing out weeks later due to the injury he sustained. That then required that ELP remain a three piece covering old Nice tunes and stuff by Copland et al.
