Line 6 HX Effects

For my application, the HXFX is the ONLY thing I bring on the road besides my wireless and JDI. For some rooms and monitor mixes, this works fine. For rookie monitor engineers, I would LOVE to have the option of adding an amp or cab sim to the signal I'm sending him and the house. When I bought the HXFX, the form factor suited me PERFECTLY so I ignored the lack of amp/cab sims and bought Line 6's reasoning that they didn't want to bloat the unit with those things since this was designed to 'live among your other pedals'.

Marketing-wise, I agree with most of you that Line 6 may have limited the HXFX to just effects to keep steering those who needed preamps to the Helix or LT.

However, with the introduction of the HX Stomp - a dramatically smaller unit that has all the effects on the HXFX along with preamps of the Helix and LT - there's really no practical reason to not offer the amp/cab sims for the HXFX. I still much prefer the form factor of the HXFX to the HX Stomp, so will not be switching over quite yet.

Finger's crossed that Line 6 says, "He's right, you know...really no reason why we can't just update the HXFX firmware now..."

Unless Line 6 has a real, legitimate reason why doing so would brick the unit -- but I haven't heard that from them.

I just notice how there’s pages and pages of complaining about the amps/cabs and not a single remark by Line 6 at all. It’s not gonna happen, guys.

If they put the amps and cabs in HXFX right now they’d sell fewer Stomps.
According to Digital Igloo, they don't care about cannibalization. If that's true, and there's support for the idea from the user base...

This is so weird. A week ago it seemed like everyone was arguing against me when I said HXFX should have amps. (Granted, I may have approached it poorly.) Now all of a sudden everyone has taken up the cause. Woohoo! Seriously, with enough vocal (and polite) support, maybe we have a chance.

I actually agreed with you initially. I just felt it went on too far and in too much of an argumentative manner. That’s why I voiced my opinion about stopping the conversation. But yes, I did agree with you overall.

Correct me if I’m wrong. My only direct experience with impulse response is in the world of reverbs, but the HX FX takes IRs, isn’t this a Cabinet and mic simulation??
I would think that IR’s are more like capturing a live sound and sound waves and how they coat your tone with it whereas the amp and cab sims are more of an electronic capturing of an analogue signal. If that makes any sense at all?? That’s how my mind works it out anyway.

An IR is created by playing a full-spectrum impulse (like a noisy click) through whatever you want to model, and comparing the input to output sound. This transformation can then be applied to your bass signal. You can model anything that is static (an amp at a given setting, but not the eq controls or how the amp would sound at different gain levels). So yes, you can create an IR of a cabinet/mic.

Yet, you still take manage to take a shot at Digital Igloo about cannibalization after his quote clearly states, "If anything, anti-cannibalization (or an upward halo effect) is in play here"...

Suddenly I'm reminded of an abusive husband trying to talk their way back into the bedroom.

Dear lord...do I even bother replying? I'm so confused right now. Somebody else brought it up. I replied to state that DI said they didn't care about it, so maybe we have a chance. That's taking shots at DI...?

Like...Can I not use that word any more or something? Tell me, how could I have worded that post so that it was not "taking a shot" at him? I'm re-reading it, and I don't see it.

Easy friend, that gif wasn't aimed at you or anyone in particular. Just enjoying watching the lively debate. :)

Yeah, sorry. I wasn't directing that at you. Misquote because your reply came in after I was going to reply and then I got the message saying "new posts, Load em?" and I did and then I hit reply to the latest without thinking.
I guess its the funky tone from this thread now days. That statement came off like you were saying Digital Igloo will do whatever, be it cannibalization or not. If you'd said, they are *against* cannibalization it'd been easier to make the distinction... Carry on
Well, I mean...I was pretty much quoting him verbatim. "Line 6 doesn't care about cannibalization; we only care if a product makes sense." Those were his exact words. He said they don't care about it. Like, it doesn't factor into their decision making process. That's what he said. So whether adding it to HX would cannibalize something else in the line is not a factor in whether or not HX got / will get amps. They "don't care" about that. Not a factor. Irrelevant to them.

I'm even more confused now. I think my brain is broken. Are we agreeing or saying the opposite thing? I don't want to argue, I'm just trying to explain. As long as the facts are clear, I'm perfectly fine with disagreeing on what conclusions individuals draw from them. I wasn't trying to restart the argument, just point out that I thought there was hope because DI said the C word was not the problem. That's all. I'm not trying to be mean or snarky or argumentative or derail the thread.

The entire Helix family is awesome, each in its own way. I'm hoping an update comes out with polyphonic effects some time around either Christmas or my tax return.

So you did mean what I inferred from what you'd said. I think we're simply on opposite sides. Cannibalization has a negative connotation to it to begin with and I see it as a bad thing. Since Digital Igloo has apparently put it 2 different ways and we were both able to find examples of it, which is confusing to us both; if Line 6 are like that then I may have just caught a touch of cynicism

I just deleted my previous post. No need for me to add to the negativity.

With the amount of product development that would have gone into the entire Helix range, and the amount of forward planning required to bring a product to market like the Stomp, this is clearly planned by Line 6.

As much as people may want amp/cab sims, they've made pretty clear it's not happening.

I believe you are correct. I would like to know why though. Even though I personally don't usually (although sometimes!!!) need amp/cab modeling, it would be great if @Digital Igloo could stop by and update us.

I think the problem I have is that users don't always fit into neat little categories. So is somebody a pedalboard person or an amp person? Depends on which day. Does that mean I have to buy two different almost-identical products? Why would a user want options left out? It's not like they take up room. If on the other hand it's a cost thing, I think most of us who want amps and cabs would be willing to pay for the extra models.

This kind of thing is one reason why a strict hierarchy of products is easier to deal with: A > B > C > D. This ecosystem doesn't have a clear relationship between Stomp and Effects. That's how it appears to me anyway.
