WOW......

(1) Man designs DIY cabinet after extensive research and collaboration. Offers free plans for it.

(2) Poor slobs who aren't DIYers contract expert builder to manufacture said product.

(3) Contractor decides to perform major modification on critical component, integral to original design (although there is certain degree of latitude in original design).

(4) Poor slobs ask questions regarding this change and are patted on the head and told encouraging words (Don't worry, it'll be alright...)

What's wrong with this picture?

BTW..."poor slobs" is only a figure of speech. I feel for you.

As I've noted before, in this thread, and several others, Greenboy is an aces dude for donating some great sets of plans to community. But, they're not the only-est way to skin a cat.

If you're a current LDS customer, getting one of these built right now, you're going to get much better service interacting directly with them.

If you're not a current LDS customer getting one of these built, and haven't interacted directly with them...then this is all internet chitchat about a specific case that isn't finished yet.

While they're certainly not the same thing, I have an LDS 2x8+5 with a 1.6khz crossover that works great. I have an LDS 2x12+2x6 with whatever crossover (or highpass) Don put in there. It works quite well.

I've had 6 LDS cabs now, all of them performed in exemplary fashion.
Before you all crucify someone without a current issue end product being delivered, you ought to at least give the guy a chance.

True, dat.

Yes. They are indeed not the same case. Besides other possible differences, the diameter has an influence. If you look at the pistonic beaming limits figures I provided earlier you will see part of the reason why what fits the goose often will not fit the gander.

But as you said, it's not all said and done yet, and there may be some miscommunication. We'll see.

I certainly didn't mean to imply any crucifixion, as I've been highly considering having one built by LDS. I've read many good things from you, Ken and others who have been very satisfied with LDS cabs. I even communicated with Don in '07 when looking for a 15" 3-way but jumped in with Dr Bass 1580 instead.

However, I have been impressed with the level of intensity in which GB researches all aspects of this particular format, and was very puzzled with the extreme diversion from the initial design goal, as related by the posters who have ordered one.

Sure there can be several ways to accomplish the building of a ported 15/6 or 15/6/tweet, but it seems these guys were primarily focused on a true fEarful design. Maybe we aren't getting the whole story too! Very interested now....

Hi
That's pretty much what I need. How much was that if you don't mind my asking. Cause maybe I should just get one.

L
112 Ultra-Light B&C coax for me.... about 27 pounds or so, and about as small as you can make a two-way 112 (coax and rear ported). Very nice sounding cab, and the spray on coating and tilt back stand are GREAT.

Just for clarification: I am not expressing any disappointment with Don at all. He said he was researching a crossover and would tell me what it was when it was all done, and I heard some internet chitchat and decided to double check. He's got an idea of what he wants to do and wants to try that out first, and I am fine with that.

Bottom line, I know what I want, and I will get what I want in my cabinet. I know approximately what is right for this cabinet and for me, having read through all the material and done extensive research. If Don can't put together the crossover I want I will be JUST FINE arranging my own - I am primarily after his carpentry expertise here, as I just do not have the skillset or tools to make a 1/2" plywood project successfully.

I do not feel the least bit snowed, as Don has communicated every step of the way and has been more than willing to do what I ask with the cabinet. Unlike some custom builder(s) who shall again remain nameless.

This type of crossover is a very new thing for a bass cabinet, and very few midranges are as sturdy as the 18 sound driver. So I don't mind doing some extra convincing and work to make it right.

See, again, it's not about a flavor. I don't care what small departures in flavor of crossover guys use my cabs with. I've encouraged multiple designs by any who would like to dive in, and enjoy seeing the development. And I've as well as pointed out several satisfactory commerical generics. But: if indeed, ridiculously high crossover points are being considered, or high-pass only designs, then I feel I have to get involved just to save people from dissapointment - and the waste of two great and fairly expensive drivers.

Just to be clear, are you against high-pass only designs in principle for a woofer/mid setup, or just for your cabs since they where designed for a 2-way crossover?

Any time you have beaming sources overlapping with non beaming sources you are going to have an inconsistent signal. So it's the same for any speaker pretty much.

You're also going to have nasty midrange distortion in most speakers - the 3015Lf and many eminence drivers suffer from a big upper mid peak or ratty distortion, either one.

Beyma drivers seem to not be as bad for that, but they still beam like any driver.

I'm against poor implementations that result in second-rate results when all the makings are there for great results. It's like having a car designed for a certain tire size but insisting it ride on a tire 7 sizes smaller. That's got to hurt performance. There's no reason to do that.

I have nothing against high-pass only when it makes good sense to do it that way. In fact I have advocated for those who want an on-off tweeter and like to use distortion that it is one good choice for fEarfuls' high frequency sections. Look at 18 Sound 6ND410 midrange driver cutsheet. Its response graphing falls off above 5K Hz just as if it already had a low-pass filter on it, and with a useful untroubled response right up TO that nice drop-off. So it will meld very nicely indeed with a tweeter that crosses over where it is 6 or so dB down from its median level.

Like most things, its a matter of doing it when it is suitable and a good tradeoff, and using another method instead when it is not.

Having tried Kindness' cab a couple times myself (solo, mind you, but it sounds damn good to my highly untrained ears :o), I plan to eventually order a 15/6 fEARFUL cab from Don myself. So I'm following this saga, and hoping everyone ends up with a great cab. Looking forward to your reviews, Ken.

What's odder yet is that after hearing Kindness reiterate his story, it seems the resistance to doing it acceptably has happened before too. Unless I skimmed too fast, that's what I got out of it.

His experience is basically what initiated all my questions, but I've learned quite a bit. Kindness thought maybe Don might just use a high pass at 1.6kHz. I was skeered... :hiding:

Anyway, still lookin' forward to Ken's real world testing. :bassist:

Don's commitment to make sure anything that leaves his shop is going to work well is very high, IME.

Like y'all, I'm looking forward to KJ's impressions.

+1 We are getting together tomorrow morning:bassist: I should mention that the cab I will be trying out is NOT based on Greenboy's design, but rather is Don's own box design with the same woofer and mid speaker that you've all been talking about, along with a Ralf Patterson crossover designed for that box (I dont' know the details exactly, but it is the higher crossover point. I don't know about the level of padding of the mid driver, nor the slope or low pass filter, etc.). So, not really apples to apples, but what the heck!
