Don's kind of a 8" speaker specialist, isn't he? I mean, I know he builds everything, but he's probably most famous for his 8" creations, wouldn't you say?
I think he's known for the 8's mostly because everybody makes 10's, and the 12's and 15's have been coming back into fashion, so anyone who wants 8's pretty much has to go to a custom builder.

As far as speaker configuration for two 8x8s, would it be better to do 2 vertical rows of 4 per cab & set them next to one another(they'd be too tall to stack w/an amp or pre/power on top) or do each cab with 2 vertical rows of 3 on the sides & 2 in the center (positioned/centered between the speakers on the sides)?

Here's what I'd do:

After I posted that I totally started fantasizing about having Don make me that actual setup, with gray Tolex and flat-gray painted grills. :bassist:
...apologies if I got you thinking about placing an order & lightening your wallet, lol :)...

...btw, thanks again for the Bass Buddy, it's excellent (I'll get the positive feedback done today)...hope the Quasar is working out...

I'm in. I have a 1x12/1x6. Don said this was the first of that combo that he made. It had been in use at a weekly jam session for years. It also was used at a few indoor gigs and a few outdoor gigs.

When I got it, I couldn't hear anything from the 6". But I built a new crossover thanks to advice from Bill Fitz Maurice and Petebass and now it is great.

And yes, the cab is resting speaker side up. It is the only way I could get enough light without having to move the cab up from the basement. And yes, the basement floor is in serious need of a painting.

How much $$ did each one of those cost?

About $400 each. plus shipping.
they 're roughly :24" length x 14 high" X 16 deep".
around 45 lb or so.
8 ohm load.

I did not want lug one big cab with 4 -8's at 75 lbs
in my Toyota late at night.
so I suggested 2 cabs instead...

The trade off is : you need 2 cabs to get the max bottom
from the 8's.

And I use either F 6 fretless & Fretted basses for blues & jazz gigs in small clubs.

Don liked them so much he started use those dim's as
a standard model for his shop and had a buyer for
them in case I returned them.

His dims on usually on the length are 20" or 22".
but the length seemed to make a difference---he noticed it when he compared them to his other designs.
(He suggested the longest length possible to accomodate the 2000's length and by design accident--
he liked this one a lot.

Coupla things:
I have:
All neo Eminence loaded 2x12+2x6. Great cab. Big box, great low end extention, nice
vintagey top end. Very light for what it is at 45lbs

2x8+5: Long throw B&C drivers, unbelievable low end for what it is. Again, nice vintagey top end. Heavyish for what it is at 40lbs

4x8+horn: Again, B&C long throws, great modern sounding cab. Big low end, shiny modern top end. The 8's go to about 2khz, the horn starts at 18.khz, so it's a real smooth transition. Dense box at 62lbs, not as heavy as Dennis's.

"out for delivery:" all neo, B&C loaded 2x12+horn. Curious to see how the B&C 12 neos respond, looking forward to the shiner top end.

Being built: B&C long throw 2x8+horn to go with the other 2x8+5...if this works out the way I hope it does, the 4x8 will go for sale. Feel free to pm me if you're interested.

Don does great stuff...

...those all sound very nice...

...I'm looking to do a 2-cab neo set-up, either 2 8x8s or an 8x8 & 412, maybe an 8x8 & 215, both cabinets w/titanium horns...

...I'm thinking both cabs 4 Ohm because I could take/use a single cab (if I chose to) & still pump good wattage into it & get good air movement & dBs from it...

...I'm also thinking about doing a stereo rig with my solid state power amp...in this regard, would it be better to get 2 identical cabs (both 8x8 or 412, for instance) or would it really make much difference?...

My new to my B&C neo loaded 2x12+horn arrived yesterday.
It's pretty much as I expected.
It's a smaller box than my LDS 2x12+2x6; so it's no surprise that the new one isn't as deep by nature.

As Don's cabs usually do, the transition from driver to horn is very smooth. Nice. It sounds way more modern than the 2x12+2x6; which is what I wanted.

It makes a niiice 4x12 stack!

When I ordered my 1x12 1x6 I specifically asked for a vintage tone. And it delivers. I originally bought it to make my CXL-112 sound a bit less modern, and it worked.

Actually pairing a more full-range cab, like the CXL-112, and a more vintage sounding cab, like the LDS, worked *better* than I expected. You get lots of lows, some highs, but it still works in a classic rock setting.

Actually my cabs are 45 lbs each.. a bit on the heavy side for what it is.

and I forgot:the 8's are the long throw speakers, not the Neo's.
(which are heavier than the Neos, but you gain more bottom end too.)

So it's matter of tradeoffs as Don informed me-
the Neos are lighter but not as deep sounding vs long throws which are deeper sounding but heavier.
if I got that right...
