Yeah, the shop was in Ferndale, but from what I gather, he built the cabs elsewhere.

+1 Don has always built his cabs in his garage and basement workshop at his house in Grosse Pointe on the East side of Detroit. He did the final set-up of each cab at the retail store in Ferndale (i.e., corners, speakers, crossovers, etc.), but has now expanded his workshop area so that he does everything from that location.

The only upside to Don closing the store is that we get together for lunch most weeks now, since we live in the same neighborhood.

Also, Burk is wrong... most of us in the Pointes go to bed at 9:30:p

Warming to the idea of having Don build me a 610 neo. I talked to him a couple of weeks ago and he said he was using 1/2" plywood in the absence of the usual 3/4" stuff from Europe. I've never had a cab made from 1/2" and I'm a little concerned about structural integrety, rigidity, tone?...Maybe if the internal bracing is done properly it doesn't matter. Just seems like a mighty big cab...
I know it'll sound good today...what about 3600 days from today?

Jim Bergantino uses standard but thinner plywood in his neo cabs. I do notice that the cab vibrates a lot more than my EpiUL's with the full 3/4" but lighter (and much more expensive) wood. However, the volume and tone seem fine to me. I guess my recommendation is that if you are going with 1/2" plywood, make sure to have the cab covered in carpet versus a spray on coating. The carpet will help with the cab vibration that can be a problem if you are using one of the little micro heads. IMO and IME.

Good points. I wonder what width ply is used in the Bergs. The rack I play through is probably 30-35lbs, so thats probably not a big deal. It does seem like the carpet would offer a damping factor to the over all resonance to the cab. Does anyone in the LDS club (insert relgious joke here) have one made from 1/2" stock?????

And I think I will ask Don soon...

thinking of cabs and LDS, Dr.Bass, and Phil jones are at the top of my list.

LDS' 2x8 is about the same price as an avatar 112. I'm very curious about what's being made these days - especially since people are looking for affordable, well built tone.

Glad there's a club. I'd love to take a trip around the midwest and swing by & grab a cab on my way back to my home in Canada.

I used the SB112 for a few months.
Then got a Schroeder 1210R; then got a Schro 1212L (which I still have and use some); and then got the first 2x8...

The 2x8+5 has a muuuch smoother top end than the Schro, which has a very aggressive horn. Nice old school sounding cab. I then added a 2x8+ horn, the LDS horn is much smoother and more useful for my needs.

I'm gonna be playing everything from funk, reggae to roots/folk rock and figure that little cab will be driven nicely with my rig. I don't think I need a giant rig and for the extra few hundred bucks it would be great to go with another.

my two 2x8's do stack well:

I don't believe Don is the type to build something he doesn't believe will work well. I believe if he says 1/2" plywood will work for the cab, it'll work and sound great. I truly believe, from talking to him, he is committed to building the highest quality cabs, he is proud of his reputation, and he stands behind his product.

I just had my cabinet built about two weeks ago. I must have gotten some of the last 3/4" plywood available.

P.S. I'm waiting for a number...

Is the bottom 2-8 rear ported or sealed?

I'm not trying to impune Don in any way. I'm probably going to have him build me the cab. Honestly, I've got the cash in my pocket, I'm just trying to obtain that warm fuzzy feeling before I pull the trigger. No doubt he builds great stuff...I mean, this can be a pretty tough crowd.

Hey SVT; this isn't to talk Don down, but, don't get used to that speed of response.
He's a one man show, and pretty busy.

Flipside: he ain't at all like Dr Bass with response/build time either.

It usually takes him a day or two to get back to me.
Acceptable for one guy running a whole shop.
Don all day long. Why anyone with even 1/2 a brain would even begin to consider the outfit in South Carolina makes no sense at all. The most important thing about Don is that he has integrity. In spades. That other maker has none. No lies & excuses from LDS. Of course Don's product is great also, but it's Don's character that is the deciding factor. And it's no contest.

I've been talking to Don for the last two weeks about having him build me a cab. We finally worked everything out and I will be ordering it tomorrow. 4x8/112. I'm pretty excited to get this cab and check it out.
I was a bit apprehensive about placing an order, based on an experience with another custom builder, but after reading the great things people had to say I figured what do I have to lose. I'm actually still waiting for the other cab (not LDS) I ordered back in September.
I'll be sure to let you guys know how it turns out and post pics when it gets here.
