Low Down Sound Cab Club started!

I've been talking to Don for the last two weeks about having him build me a cab. We finally worked everything out and I will be ordering it tomorrow. 4x8/112. I'm pretty excited to get this cab and check it out.

Oh, you are just getting a standard 4x8/1x12, how boring :D I can't wait to see what that looks like. Did Don give you any idea of weight/size?

Don't worry about Don. If it does get delayed, mine was due to the spray on coating, he will let you know why and when.

That's great to know. I wasn't too worried about it since I had not read about anyone waiting a really long time for an LDS cab. I've been waiting for that other cab so long I sometimes forget its still coming. Which is too bad. If that cab sounded good I would have ordered a second one after checking it out. But there is no way I will wait that long again.

I just ordered a cab from Don today....a lightweight 410 neo, red tolex, chrome corners, black grill cloth. He said it should be 57-60 lbs.

Can't decide on vintage leather strap handles on the sides, or the metal bar recessed ones. I'd like to keep it vintage-cool, but I want it to be easy to carry. Any thoughts?

"Doubling rig"

The 2x8+horn kicks Major Booty (saaaaalute!) in this regard. I much prefer it to a 110.
Furthermore, I prefer the long throw 8's to the neo's. More throw = more depth.

Agreed!!!
Don built these 2 cabs for My Sunn 2000S.
with 2 -8's, mid, & tweeter, and off & on switch for the tweeter.
They weight about 45 lb each.
and have a even response from low B- up to my high C
for both my F 6's basses.

C5000:
more unsolicted advise;)
Don's spray on lining is the best in the biz. Major durable.
Tolex tears.

Also, cloth grills are puncture susceptable, leaving speeks a lil vulnerable.

For yeoman club duty, I'd re-think tolex and grill cloth.

D-Kong: I bet those lil buggers kick it!

Curious if you discussed plywood with him.

My pref would be to do the spray-on and the metal handles to prevent this...:bawl: Gonna be a bitchin cab though!!! Good luck!

My LDS 4-10 has the recessed handles. It is very easy to handle. The handles are comfortable and out of the way. The out of the way part is important, for me, because I lay the cab on it's side for transport.

Congrats on your decision! You'll be very happy. :)

They 're nice!
Don suggested increasing the length of cabs from his standard of 20?" to 24": to match the Sunn amp.
He liked that so much - He kept it as standard cab design.
In fact- he had a buyer for them if I decided to return
them!

For C5000-
Recommend recessed handles- I have them and they 're easy to deal with!

Hey Chef are the 2 6" mids in your 2x12" LDS cab sealed? Do you know the crossover point? Volume control for them?

No idea on the sealed part...bought it used from Eric Cioe here.
I believe they cross at 2khz, and, there's no attenuator.

Let me know how that works. I think I already mentioned it in this thread, but I had a 1.6kHz crossover to my 6"and I found I was not getting much out of it.

I built an 800Hz crossover and was much happier. But, YMMV.

Hi all,
I am a non-pro but steadily gigging bassist. Wedding band, playing many styles in a band that for its size plays at a reasonable stage volume (partially thanks to my musician's earplugs:-)

Anyway, I play my Fender jazz through Sansamp BDDI and then into my SVT 3 Pro (blue and red), with Hartke XL410. The Hartke is 18 years old and has served me well, but I would love to downsize to a 212 or such, so as to not have to haul the 80 lb 410 anymore.

Is 212 going to cut it, and how might a LDS 212 sound compared to my current cab?

Feel free to flame away, I understand that my question might spark some, er, extreme responses. And if you feel that this is needs a separate thread, no prob. Just let me know and I'll delete this and start a different thread. Figured I would start in this thread since others looking at LDS might have a similar question, maybe...

Thanks.
