Low Down Sound Cab Club started!

Thanks Craig. I was hoping to find a used 212 since my GAS fund is long gone and I am not ready to sell my P-bass to fund a new cab. Not yet, at least...

Don was awesome to work with on getting my Neo 3-way 1x12" with a 5" mid and tweeter. I said I wanted something with a pretty flat response, and it goes perfectly with my Yamaha BBT500H, but I'd probably get a cab that was 4 ohms and not rated for so much wattage (my cab is 8ohm and can handle 500w at 8... I think my head pushes 125w, but this setup is loud.)

Just talked to him on the phone. Very nice guy. Says his 210 might just be enough for me for my purposes. Or maybe the 410. As always, it comes down to how much GAS $ I have or don't have...

Awhile back, maybe last summer, I played hooky from work and took my upright over to Don's shop when it was still open. I tried several of his cabinets, using a Realist pickup on a Kay Swingmaster:

1x12; 2x10, 1x15, 4x10, 2x12, and a pretty unique one -- 4 6.5" speakers. All of them using an AI Coda head; not sure which model.

Believe it or not, the one with the 6.5" speakers ate the others up. I can't remember now, but it seems like it was two front firing and one on each side. I think...it's been awhile.

But the response was SO quick on that cabinet. I couldn't believe my ears. It was only $200, used, but I was too stupid to pull the trigger. Naturally, when I went back a week later, it was gone.

If any of you ever get a chance to play one of Don's cabs with the 6.5" speakers for upright, you will be amazed. It looked like a Phil Jones briefcase and it had a little gadget on the bottom that you could flip to tilt the cab up a bit.

I only lived about 20 minutes from his shop, and took it for granted. I'm so bummed he closed the store. Don's a damn fine bass player, too. I'm lucky enough to be playing with the guitarist and drummer that he played with in Wixom Slim and the Wize Guys.

Good stuff...

:atoz: Sorry folks, I've been into this total concentration woodshedding thing for a while now, months, (my fingertips are killing me) and I totally forgot about the LDS club!

And of course, I am still in love with my two 16 inch cubed LDS cabs: my 12 & coax, and my 10 and 5 and coax. People still flip out when they hear them for the first time :D

Anyway, as far as I can tell from the requests or count me in's, Dennis Kong is #13, Sean M is #14, and Craig S is #15.

I am going to schedule myself a reminder to monitor more often, and again let's see more of those fine LDS cabs!

:p:p:p:p

And if I missed anyone...and I know this is all in fun, but please let me know, so's I can keep things straight up!

And remember, the cab shop is still open and going strong. Only the brick and mortar retail store closed.

can anyone comment on the comparison between my current Hartke 410 XL, the Schroeder 1212L or 1215L, Epifani 112 (stack of 2) and LDS cabs of similar size. Thanks!

Errr.... They are all boxes loaded with speakers. I guess I could understand a post just asking how the Schroe cabs would sound different from the Hartke--and that would go in its own thread.

LDS cabs are mostly custom one-offs, one LDS cab doesn't necessarily sound like another LDS cab, never mind like/unlike a Hartke or Schroe.

Not at all, chime on in...it's just not as cut and dried a question as it seems.
The hartke, schro and epi products you list are all kinda substantively different from each other to my ear...then, to thry to compare all that to a cab manufacturer who is basically a design and build to order kinda guy is really tough.

My advise to you would be to call Don, tell him what your sonic goals are, and see what he recommends.
